Edward G. Phetteplace, 94, a lifelong Norwich resident, passed away on May 13, 2019. He was well known in the area as a local historian, having written 18 books on local history. He was an accomplished artist, starting with oil paintings and moving on to painting on slate and eventually painting nature scenes on saw blades. He also taught himself to play the piano and loved to dance. He was a member of Broken Squares square dancing club. Edward made his living as a carpenter and a trapper. He began trapping at the age of 11 and continued until the age of 91.
Edward is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary; his children, Beverly and David Meyers, David and Sandy Phetteplace, and Christina (Tina) and Mickey Lucia; his grandchildren, Leeann and Bruce Hagen, Kelly and Steve Lerche, Gary and Susan Phetteplace, and Brian Phetteplace; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; his good friends, Paul Button, Bob Fitch, and Ed Dakin; as well as several close friends from the New York State Trappers Association.
Edward’s family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Health Care Facility and Chenango County Hospice for the compassion and care shown to him.
At Edward’s request, there will be no formal funeral services. Those wishing may make donations in his memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County, 41 Hayes St. Norwich, NY 13815.
