Niantic- Theresa H. Kane, longtime resident of Fitchville (Bozrah), passed away peacefully at home on January 5, 2021 at the age of 90. She was born and raised in Fitchville, one of eight children of the late Peter Homiski and Anna Brodjek Homiski.
At the early age of 12, she began working in the grocery store in Fitchville after school and continued to work at the store on and off throughout her life for 3 different owners until her retirement. Theresa had a special place in the hearts of the townspeople. She became very well known and customers always appreciated her friendly smile and willingness to assist them.
Theresa was always mindful of the needs of others. She would visit many of the elderly people in town and bring them flowers or vegetables from her garden. Often times when she had a medical appointment, she would bring the staff a dozen donuts or a bouquet of flowers. She will be profoundly missed by her family and friends and will always be remembered for her loving acts of kindness.
On January 3, 1951 Theresa married the love of her life, William A. Kane, Jr. They purchased a home in the Fitchville village where they lived for 65 years until William's death in 2016. Theresa and Bill took great pride in their home and could be found most weekends doing yard work and planting and cultivating gardens. Theresa and Bill also loved to travel and they visited all of the 50 states, each of the Canadian provinces and several countries in Europe.
Theresa was always willing to serve her community in any way she could. She was a longtime member of the Bozrah Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a dedicated member of St. John's Rosary Altar Society. For many years she volunteered her time cleaning and ironing the church linens and working at the annual church bazaars. Theresa would always make time to generously donate her blood to the American Red Cross.
Theresa loved to bowl and won many awards for her accomplishments. She participated in several bowling leagues over the years and was a very dedicated league secretary. She recorded all of the stats for the league but she went above and beyond her assigned duties and would give out little prizes each week to team members for their individual achievements.
Theresa is survived by her three children: Kathleen Kane Arpin (Andy) of Niantic, William A. Kane Ill (Susan) of Mystic, and Beverly Anne Braus of Bozrah; 8 grandchildren, 9 great ¬grandchildren, two brothers Joe Homiski and John Homiski, one sister Genevieve Hill, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends and neighbors in her hometown and church community. She was predeceased by her siblings Frank Chojnicki, Archie Homiski, Stella Stanley, and Ida Newsome.
There will be a Funeral Mass on Saturday January 9, 2021 at 9:00 A.M. in Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown. Entombment will immediately follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Norwich.
