He was born February 1, 1931 in Norwich, CT., the son of George F. Tibbetts and Myrtice Browning Tibbetts. He was a resident of Norwich for many years before moving to Colchester in 2005.
He was a 1949 graduate of the Norwich Free Academy and attended New London Business College before being called to active duty with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.
He began his civil service career at the Submarine Base in the Accounting Dept. and then at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as the Pay and Audit Supervisor of the Comptroller’s Office. He retired from the former U.S. Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London and Newport R.I in 1986 as Budget Office Supervisor with over 34 years of Federal service.
He continued to work part time for Aquidneck Management Associates as a Senior Analyst and also for the former Norwich Savings Society.
He was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Norwich for over 60 years and served on many committees and served as Treasurer for several years. He was a life member and Past Master of Somerset Lodge No. 34 AF&AM. He also served as Financial Secretary and Treasurer of Nemrod Grotto for 42 years and was named Treasurer Emeritus in 1999. He was also a member of the Mohegan Chapter #1004 of AARP and a life member of the American Legion Post #4 also in Norwich.
He was married to Dorothy St. Lawrence at St. Patrick Cathedral in Norwich on October 20, 1956. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Nancy Deede of Richmond, R.I., Carol and husband David Gilroy of Salona Beach, CA., son James Tibbetts and wife Debra of West Granby, CT; by his grandchildren, Rebekah Dilernia, Sarah, Benjamin, Emily Deede, and Kaitlyn Tibbetts and by great granddaughter Anamarie Deede. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother F. Allan Tibbetts.
Calling hours will be held at the Church and Allen Funeral Home in Norwich on Friday from 5 to 8pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Central Baptist Church in Norwich at 10am. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
