James H. Montie

Jim graduated from the Norwich Regional Technical School in 1963 and attended Thames Valley State Technical College.

He worked for the Norwich Public Utilities for over 30 years, first as a lineman and later as shop electrician. During this time he made many close, loyal, and lasting friendships. He retired in 2004.

Jim served in the United States Army in the Vietnam War with the 1st Infantry Division as a helicopter gunman. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Army Sharpshooter Badge.

Jim was an avid sportsman and was one of the top baseball pitchers in the Norwich area. He was a mainstay on the Norwich Tech baseball and basketball teams and was awarded Tech’s Athlete of the Year trophy for the 1962-63 school year. He played guard on the undefeated 18-0 Tech basketball team in the 61-62 season. He was a starting pitcher for the Tech baseball team for 4 years. He also pitched for the American Legion Post No. 4 team in 1962-63 and later for the Silver Star AC and the Thamesville AC teams in the Norwich City League. He loved golf starting to play in his early teens and enjoyed playing golf with his friends for most of his life. Jim was inducted into the Norwich Sports Hall of fame in 1996.

He is survived by his two brothers, William Montie and his wife Mary of Colorado Springs, CO, and Douglas Montie and his wife Barbara of Norwich, CT; his Godchild, nephew, & best friend, Dr. Dwayne D. Montie and his wife Sandra and their daughter Emma of Palm City, FL, and a niece, Melissa (Montie) and her husband Kevin Devolve and their sons, Noah and Benjamin of Colorado Springs, CO. Also, his friends Coral F., Eric L., Don C, Dee Dee C, YA (Paul) W, Al G, and all of his other close friends he treasured over the years.
