Born on March 23, 1925, to the late John and Emily (Edwards) Howarth, Dorothy grew up in South Windham, CT with a strong sense of family and community that would guide her throughout her life.
On April 16, 1947, Dorothy married the love of her life, Ralph W. Lathrop, in Norwich, CT and settled down in Bozrah, CT. Dorothy was a devoted member of St. David's Episcopal Church, where her kindness and faith were evident to all who knew her.
A member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Dorothy served as a past matron of Sachem Chapter #57.
She is survived by her children, Janet M. Cosenza of Bozrah, CT, Joyce L. Potoff (Alan) of Freeland, MI, and Jonathan L. Lathrop (Anne Galliher) of Old Lyme, CT. Her memory will also be cherished by her grandsons, Christopher Allard (Carole) of Canton, MI, Jeffrey Potoff (Helene) of Southfield, MI, and Matthew Potoff (Jennifer) of Chelsea, MI, a sister Evelyn Hopkins of Lebanon, CT, as well as one great-grandson, six great-granddaughters, and one great-great-granddaughter.
Besides her parents, Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Ralph, son-in-law Matthew J. Cosenza, brother John R. Howarth, and sister Edith Doubleday.
A memorial service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Gales Ferry, CT, on Monday, November 18 at 1:30 PM followed by burial at Maplewood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a local food pantry or Humane Society of your choice.
Dorothy will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her devotion to her faith, and the love she gave to her entire family. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
