Phuong was born to Duong Nguyen and Thi Vo in Thanh Thien Village, Hue, Vietnam on April 4, 1952. He married his wife, Xuan Yen Ho, in 1977 and had their first two children in Vietnam and their youngest after immigrating to the United States in 1990.
Phuong was an accomplished scholar who held bachelor's degrees in chemistry and physics during a period of time in Vietnam where it was rare to even achieve a high school diploma. Among his proudest accomplishments was being one of three students in the Catholic Archdiocese of Hue to receive a full scholarship to study abroad in the Philippines. Unfortunately, Phuong was unable to accept the scholarship due to the fall of Saigon in 1975 along with the loss of his two older brothers. Instead, he decided to stay in the countryside to work on the family's farm in order to take care of his aging parents.
In 1990, Phuong and his family immigrated to the United States where he found his second family in the Vietnamese Catholic community at Our Lady of Peace in North Hills, California. He spent the next three decades of his life dedicated to faith and service, leading and participating in numerous ministries across Los Angeles County. In his ministry work, he touched many lives as a teacher, a leader, and brother within the Vietnamese community. However, despite leaving Vietnam, he always remembered to take care of his family and village in Vietnam.
In his later life, Phuong found joy in reconnecting with long-lost friends and family across the world through Facebook. He was also an avid fisherman, often going on deep sea expeditions to the Channel Islands with friends and family. His skill as a fisherman was unmatched, as demonstrated by being a 3-time jackpot winner, catching the largest fish on each expedition, though he will always say he got cheated out of a fourth jackpot during one of those trips. Whether it was traveling with Uyen, playing cards with Quang, hiking with Nara, fishing with Minh, or biking with Kailey, he always found time for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Xuan Yen Ho; his daughter and her fiance, Uyen Thai Nguyen and Jim Aguilar; his eldest son and daughter-in-law, Quang Nhat Nguyen and Nara Shin, along with his granddaughter Kailey Nguyen; his youngest son, Minh Nhat Nguyen; his older sister, Bong Nguyen, along with her husband, children, and grandchildren in Vietnam.
Phuong was a kind and loving man who dedicated his life to his family, community, education, and God. He was a model example of Faith and Service. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. All are welcome to join the following services in memory of Phuong Nguyen (saint name Jacob or Giacobe):
