June was a graduate of Dorsey High School in 1944. She attended her first year of college at Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Oklahoma. She returned to California to attend UCLA for one year before moving on to USC where she would graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business in 1949 and a Master’s in Education plus teaching credential in 1952. She was licensed as a Marriage, Family & Child Counselor in 1971.
In 1950, June married William Charles Schmidt and later married Christopher David Sloan in 1959 and remained married to Christopher until his passing in 2011.
In 1952, she began her career in education at North Hollywood High School teaching business, short-hand, and typing. In 1963, she started her position as the College and Scholarship Counselor at William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills. She passionately enjoyed her long career in education; she loved teaching and supporting the students in their career pursuits.
She was also active as a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, USC Town & Gown, CSUN Arts Council, Phi Mu Sorority, and LA Philharmonic.
She raised her family with joy in exploring all experiences life could offer. She loved traveling the world. Her first trip to Yosemite National Park was in the late 1940's and she deeply loved Yosemite building a cabin, backpacking the high sierras and skiing at Badger Pass. She was a pioneer in helping to create The Redwoods in Yosemite for all to experience.
She is survived by her three children, Gregory William Sloan, Susan Leigh Sloan, and Lauren Jeanne Sloan. Her spirit, laughter, smile, and energy were contagious. She will be deeply missed.
Family, friends, and those whose lives were touched by June are invited to her service on April 12, 2023 (it would have been her 96th birthday) at Inglewood Park Cemetery located at 720 East Florence Avenue in Inglewood 90301 in the Mausoleum of the Golden West - Sanctuary of Palm.
