John Robert Chism passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 at Hospice of West Alabama. He was 83 years old, Chism was born in Northport on Sept. 2, 1939, the youngest son of John L. and Trudie M. Chism. He graduated from Montgomery High School of Brownville in 1958 and was late drafted into the United States Army in 1963, serving stateside until 1969 when he was honorably discharged. On Sept. 25, 1963, he married his wife Pat Westbrook, with whom he would share his life for 59 wonderful years. Robert Chism is preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers Taylor Chism, T.E. Chism and sister Ann Chism. He is survived by: His wife; brother Billy Chism (Mary Dell Chism); sister-in-law Ann (Hartley) Chism; The couple’s two children Sherri Chism Howard (Chad Howard) and Michael Chism (Christi Chism); grandchildren Ryan Phillips, Brad Phillips, Erin Chism Cork (Jamie Cork) and Ethan Chism; Along with several nieces and nephews. Chism loved old Western movies, working outside, watching sports and spending time with his family. Arrangements are set for 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at Bone Camp Community Cemetery in Northport and will be handled by Sunset Funeral Home. The graveside only service will be officiated by Rev. Scott Montgomery and Chaplain Tim Holder of Hospice of West Alabama. Pallbearers for the funeral are: Ryan Phillips, Brad Phillips, Ethan Chism, Jamie Cork, Dale Phillips, Steve Sturdivant, Dawson Howard and Terry Sanford. Honorary pallbearers are: Mr. & Mrs. David Barnett, Mr. & Mrs. Buddy Sturdivant, Diana Sturdivant, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Walters,
Denise Kizziah, the Rue Road community, Carroll’s Creek Fire Protection District, Rev. Josh Horton and members of Tabernacle Free Will Baptist Church, Carolwood Free Will Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Medical Deputies, Northport Fire Local 2676, Dr. Clint McEntyre, nurses Nikki and Lori, the staff at NorthRiver Primary Care, and the nurses and aides at Hospice of West Alabama.
