Joe had been a resident at Canterfield Memory Care of Brentwood, TN for the past 11 months to be close to his son and family.
A graveside service will be held at 12PM on Saturday, January 29 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Northport, AL.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Melba Mills, parents Early and Bama Louise Mills of Gordo, and siblings, Marlon Mills of Gordo, Earl S Mills of Garden Grove CA, Bill Mills of Birmingham, and Peggy Mills of Keystone Heights FL.
Survivors include his son, Joe David Mills (Brenda Fleming Mills) of Brentwood TN, grandson, Josh Mills (Ellie) and great-grandchildren Cade and Quinn of Brookhaven GA; grandson, Zach Mills (Lori) and great-grandchildren Vivi and Stockton of Brentwood, TN.
Joe graduated from Gordo High School where he met and married his school sweetheart, Melba Burkhalter. Immediately after high school, Joe joined the US Air Force where he had a distinguished 20-year career as a Flight Engineer being stationed across the US from which he flew troops and military cargo all over the world. Joe retired the Air Force in 1968 and returned home to Gordo to be active in owning a service station, handyman service, and working with Housel Hardware. Joe finished his working years with the Gordo Post Office as a rural mail carrier in the community.
Joe was known in the Gordo community for his warm personality and helping hand he extended to all.
