She was born September 17, 1930 in Roanoke, AL to her late parents James and Ada Thomas and was the last surviving child of 12 children, 9 girls and 3 boys. She married the love of her life, John Curtis Franklin, Jr. on April 15, 1950 and joined him in a 65 year active and retired ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ across multiple states.
Mrs. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Franklin, Jr., a daughter Marcia Stewart and Marcia’s husband and “favorite son-in-law”, Jerry Stewart.
Mrs. Hazel is survived by daughters Janet Mills (David) Lynn Haven, FL, Brenda Jones (Gary) Tuscaloosa, AL and Patti Bates (Chris) Hayden, AL, grandchildren Alicia, Jennifer, Chris, Davy, Brent, Jeremy, Timothy, Mandy and 16 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hazel’s life reflected a Godly example of humble servanthood to others and displayed many of the virtues and characteristics of a Proverbs: 31 woman – Dignity, Patience, Diligence, Generosity, Courage,
Wisdom and Devotion. While she enjoyed working with the flowers in her yard, gardening and fishing, she was best known for her cooking skills perfected through the years after taking over cooking duties at age 14 for her large family after her mother’s death.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the Northport Church of God, Northport, Alabama. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
Following the service, interment will occur at Sunset Memorial Park, Northport, Alabama.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Atchley, Timothy Atchley, Shawn Bliss, Brent Jones, Chris Mills and Davy Mills.
