She was born and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, and moved to Ontario to work and support herself, at the age of 17. Although her first marriage, to Paul MacBride, was short-lived, it gave her her greatest pride and joy, her son Greg. For the rest of her life, he remained her highest priority. She married Roy Carlson, and the three of them were a happy trio, living and working in North Vancouver, where she enjoyed a close relationship with the Carlson family. They enjoyed vacations in Hawaii and Mexico together, and road trips to Saskatchewan to spend time with her cherished family there. She was beautiful and glamourous, but also down to earth. She was a very good cook, who favored whole, natural, organic food, taking care of her beautiful home, and going for long walks with Roy and Greg. She enjoyed driving her car until the age of 96, and shortly thereafter moved to Amica Edgemont, where she received excellent care, as she began to slow down.
She passed away peacefully there, at the age of 98.
Mary is lovingly remembered by her son Greg MacBride, sister Irene Brooks and nephew Brian Polischuk and his family, and her Carlson family: niece Susan Carlson Owens and nephews Eric, Steve and Brent Carlson, and their families, as well as many extended Babinchuk and Carlson family members.
