Mary Buscombe (nee Dowsley) passed away peacefully on November 25th in her 90th year. The daughter of Dr. Gordon and Theodora (Ted) Dowsley, she was born in Abbey, Saskatchewan and raised in Vancouver, spending her childhood summers on the beach in Woodlands with her best friend, Barby. After graduating from Prince of Wales High School in Vancouver she attended UBC for a year – for the parties! She then moved to Toronto where she worked in a law firm and made new lifelong friends. After returning to Vancouver she continued to spend summers with dear friends and family in Woodlands, and met Dick. Mary and Dick were married in 1962, and eventually they replaced their summer cottage in Woodlands with a welcoming year-round home, fulfilling their lifelong dream.
Mary loved people, nature, and of course, her dogs, of which there were many throughout her life. She cherished so many lasting friendships throughout her life. She also adored visiting Hawaii with family, it was her second favourite place in the world. Mary will be dearly missed and forever remembered for her generous spirit, and her wonderful sense of humour and quick wit that remained with her till the end.
Mary leaves behind her children, Charles, Donald (Anny), Marita (Duncan), her beloved grandchildren Josie, Brendan, Thomas and Lucy, along with numerous nephews and a niece. Mary is survived by her sister, Dorothy Foster, and brother-in-law John Foster. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Dick, and her brother (Don Dowsley).
Mary’s family would like to thank the caring staff and nurses at Hollyburn House.
There will be no service by request and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
