Maisie "Jean" Emily White

Jean White lived her life as a very independent person. She lost her husband, Cyril, when she was only 55 years old. She learned very quickly how to make life on her own. She spoke straight forward what was on her mind which, at times, was a little too blunt, but deep inside she cared deeply for everyone in her life, family and friends.

Jean took an active role during WWII first in the RAF as a radar operator, then later in the Fire Service during the Blitz of London. After the war she married Cyril whom she had met during the war and started a new life. Soon after, in 1952, the couple migrated to Canada seeking greater opportunities. After some initial shock of landing during winter in Quebec with no French language skills, they came to love Canada. Their two sons, Malcolm and Gary, grew up with true Canadian values…Hockey Night in Canada Saturday nights was religion.

After Cyril’s death in 1976 at the age of 60, Jean looked west to Vancouver which was Cyril’s dream to retire there. Son Malcolm already lived in Vancouver with his wife. Jean packed the boxes in 1978 and moved out to the coast. Son Gary followed in 1980 and the family was reunited in Vancouver. Jean continued as the matriarch of the White family and drew us around her. Unfortunately, son Malcolm passed away in 2012. Jean continued to live independently until 2018 when she had a fall and broke her hip. She became confined to a wheelchair and required residential care. Despite that, she took on the challenge and won the hearts of the care staff at Eagle Ridge Manor. They appreciated that she was still doing what she could for herself and remained as independent as possible under the circumstances.

Jean passed away on October 6th after sharing time with family and close friends. She was hoping to live to 100 just to get the congratulation letter from Queen Elizabeth. She came up just short as she would have turned 98 on November 24th.

Jean is survived by her sister, Joan, her son, Gary, granddaughters Careen and Aisha, and great grandchildren Charlotte, Sage, and Remy.

A memoriam will be held at a later date ….gin and tonics for all.
