John Campbell Shakespear Miles

PASSED AWAY: December 11, 2021, Surrey, B.C.

After a very fulfilling life, at age 103, Jack passed away peacefully surrounded by family members at home in Surrey, which was his wish.

Jack was predeceased by his wife: Enid Miles (Shaw), sons: Christopher (Chris) D.S. Miles and John Alexander (Alec) Miles. He leaves to mourn, his beloved companion Pauline Hall; Daughters: Diana Rosalind Dombowsky (Jerry) and Janet Lorna Batchler (Merv); Daughter-in-Law Mary-Frances (Fran) Miles; Grandchildren: John Matthew Miles; Tara Alexandra Miles (Gary); Anthony Batchler (Simone), James Batchler; Great-Grandchildren: Hailey and Emily Batchler; and his nephew Jack Miles (Sandra)

Jack, a Canadian RAF World War II Veteran, was an immensely healthy, charming and handsome man whose good luck was well appreciated by himself.

Growing up on a sprawling estancia in the pampas with seven siblings and attending boarding school at St. George’s in Buenos Aires, Jack became an educated, athletic gentlemen who never lost his suave style in appearance. Yet he could somersault over a horse’s head and land on his feet when his horse abruptly stopped from a canter.

His courage, skill and luck safely landed he and his skinny prisoner of war passengers safely into a Burmese rice paddy when his DC3’s two engines failed.

He survived the torpedoed Upwey Grange by breaking his achilles heel while riding his motorbike in Buenos Aires to board the stricken ship. He had signed up to join the RAF in 1940. When he recovered, he caught another ship to England along with his cousin, Dicky. He became a flying instructor which took him to Canada for specialized training. He was then transferred to Transport Command in Canada flying 8 hour flights over the Pacific searching for submarines and reporting weather.. While in Vancouver, he married his first wife, Lorna, with whom he had four children. Jack retired as Vice-President of Pacific Western Airlines at the age of 60 with his adoring wife, Enid, who was magic with music, flowers and art. Jack was famous for his entertainment and self- taught skill at playing his elaborate organ and proudly barbecuing very rare meat. Lucky again, he met Pauline in 2012 as her doting love gave him tremendous comfort until his death.

We know that Jack would like to thank all of his friends and family for their love and support during his journey through life.
