Ev was born on December 3, 1931 in Dodsland, Saskatchewan. She was raised on a farm near Herschel, Saskatchewan and is predeceased by her parents, Roy and Jean Rea, and her brothers, Kenneth and Harold.
Ev trained as a nurse at Saskatoon City Hospital where she also worked for two years. It was during this time that she met and married Doug McDonald in 1954. She also worked for several years in a physician’s office. Ev took time out from nursing to raise her 4 children: Joan (Mike), Cam (Nicole), Susan (Peter) and Sharon (Jamie). She and her family moved to Edmonton, Vancouver, and finally settled in North Vancouver in 1967. Ev took a nursing refresher course at BCIT and joined the staff at Lion’s Gate Hospital in the Intensive Care Nursery in 1971.
Ev was known for her amazing pies. Her pies were sought after at the Lynn Valley United Church fall fairs. One year she baked over 40 fruit pies. Her family were also the grateful recipients of Ev’s wonderful baking.
Ev is survived by her husband of 68 years, her 4 children and their spouses, and her 9 grandchildren: Laura (Jason), Meagan (Adam), Sean (Kendra), Chanel (Justin), Justine, Bryan, Chloe, Lauren and Neve. She also has one great-granddaughter, Savannah.
Ev was a calm, kind, quiet woman with tremendous strength of will. When faced with a cancer diagnosis at the age of 90, she fought hard to battle the disease. Ev passed away peacefully on October 11, 2022 at the North Shore Hospice, surrounded by her loving family.
A celebration of her life will be held at Lynn Valley United Church on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00 p.m.
