Tykie passed away peacefully at her home in Palm Beach Gardens, with her son, Ernie by her side on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at 89y/o. Two hours before she passed, she had breakfast with her granddaughter, Maria. Tykie was born to Emily & Jetur Squires of Hampton Bays, NY in 1932. She was an Artist, Wood Carver, Gardiner, and Conservationist, and she loved a good joke and her family. Her husband Ernest predeceased her in December 2017.
As a Miniaturist Painter & Carver, The White House asked her to do a painting on a wooden egg for the Easter Egg Roll in 1985. This Wooden Egg is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum as a permanent collection.
In 1996, Tykie was an Artist In Residence at a remote island wilderness in Isle Royale National Park, Upper Peninsula, MI. She spent three weeks in a rustic cabin on a cliff overlooking Lake Superior. When the wind blew, the cabin shook, and the fog made it impossible to see anything outside, no running water or electricity. She said it was the best experience of her life and made her strong and inspired her to paint the “ Spirit of Isle Royale” which the Parks Department had made into a Print and sold to benefit the Park.
Tykie was a member of Artists for Conservation, Miniature Artists of America, Miniature Art Society of Florida, Miniature Painters Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, D.C., and Marquis Who’s Who of American Women.
She is survived by her two sons, Ernest D Ganz III, who lovingly took care of her in her last year of life, and wife, Lenie, and Daniel E Ganz and his wife Linda. Granddaughters, Maria and Julia. Grandsons, Ernest IV, Blake, and Taylor.
A memorial service for Sylvia will be held Sunday, August 7, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral, Cremation and Event Center, 754 U.S. Highway One, North Palm Beach, Florida 33408.
