Kathleen Clune “Kay” Sweeney, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 with her daughters by her side. Kay was born to John “Jack” and Helen Stafford Clune in Hartford, CT, on April 22, 1923. After graduating from Mount St. Joseph Academy, Kay was employed by Pratt-Whitney Aircraft. There she met her future husband, James T. “Jim” Sweeney. Kay and Jim were married on August 28, 1943 during Jim’s service in the U.S. Army. Their wedding was the start of a wonderful marriage which would span 67 years. Following Jim’s discharge from the Army, Kay ad Jim resided in West Hartford and Kay began her life as a homemaker and mother. As the years passed, Kay and Jim were blessed with five daughters. In 1961, the Sweeney family moved to West Palm Beach to begin a new life in Florida. For many years Kay was active I church, school and community organizations, but her family always remained the center of her life. Kay and Jim were fortunate to enjoy a long and happy retirement. During recent years, as Jim’s health declined, Kay put aside her own needs and dedicated herself tirelessly to Jim’s care. The loving bond between Kay and Jim was a shining inspiration to their extended family.
Kay is survived by her devoted husband, Jim, and her loving daughters, Ellen Fox (Theodore) of College Station, TX; Kathleen Doyle (David) of Durham, NC; Ann Schilling (Christopher) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Patricia Pontz (John, deceased) of Jupiter, FL; and Mary Beth Ali (Thomas) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL.Kay was a proud and adoring “Nannie” to fifteen grandchildren, whose lives were greatly enriched by her love: Jennifer Fox, Jocelyn Fox Goode, Christine Doyle Lea, Jeffrey Doyle, Allison Doyle Taylor, Katie Doyle Darst, James, Paul, Thomas and John Schilling, Nicholas Pontz, and Timothy, Kathleen, Michael and Ryan Ali. With the arrival of a new generation, Kay became a loving “Great Nannie” to her great-grandchildren, Erin Lea, Eberle Kay Goode, and Catherine, Emma, Alexis, Joshua, Amanda and Jack Schilling.Also surviving are her sister, Patricia Dupuis Casey (John), of West Hartford, CT, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 1, 2001 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home with a scripture service starting at 7:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at St. Clare Catholic Church, North Palm beach, with interment to follow at Riverside memorial Park in Tequesta.
