It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kim Lyle LaFreniere, who preferred to be called Mike, from a short battle with cancer. Mike passed away on February 11, 2023 at the age of 61 years. He will be sadly missed by his adopted parents Vicenta and Eufemio Tacan, Aunt Eileen and Ron Hagen, Aunt Lorena LaFreniere, many cousins too numerous to mention and the BTEC staff and his many friends there. He was predeceased by grandpa and grandma Frank and Allie LaFreniere; mother Shirley LaFreniere, aunts; Blanche Saccucci (Pete), Angela McLeod (Angus), Lorraine Knutson (Ellis), uncles; Lloyd LaFreniere, Leo LaFreniere (Agnes). Mike was born September 12, 1961 in North Battleford. He lived on his grandparent’s farm until the age of 7. He was diagnosed with autism and developmental disabilities so his mom decided he should attend Centennial Park School for exceptional children in the city. When he aged out of the school system he eventually attended the Battleford Trade and Education program which facilitates activities for the participants. While there he participated in a variety of fun and interesting experiences and made many friends especially with the staff. He lived with his mom until she was unable to care for him due to an accident at which time he moved in with “mom and dad” (Vicenta and Eufemio). He lived there for 17 years and was very happy there. In the summer of 2022 he was diagnosed with cancer and in December moved into River Heights Lodge. He will be remembered for his amazing memory, giving nicknames to many he knew, his love of Don Messer and lighting up when he saw his family and friends. He surely left his mark on all who knew him which goes to show how special he really was.
A funeral service for Mike will be held Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Calasanctius Roman Catholic Church, 1942 98th Street, North Battleford, Saskatchewan.
Mike will be laid to rest in Hafford Cemetery, Hafford, Saskatchewan.
