Mr. Wavery Eugene “Gene” Hunter, 77, husband of Judith Lynne “Judy” (Plechus) Hunter, a retiree of the U.S. Postal Service Maintenance Technical Support Center, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019, in the Norman Regional Healthplex Hospital. A public wake and viewing will take place on Tuesday, September 24 from 6-8 pm at the Primrose Funeral Home. Deacon Steve Lewis will be the officiant. Funeral services for Mr. Hunter will be held on Wednesday, September 25 at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church by the Primrose Funeral Home and officiated by Father Irwin.
Wavery Eugene “Gene” Hunter was born on December 21, 1941 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was the son of the late Wavery Columbus Hunter and Margie Louisia (Straily) Hunter. Gene was raised and received his formal education in the Oklahoma City School System and was a graduate of Capitol Hill High School in 1959. Gene attended the University of Oklahoma and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1964 and a Master of Science in 1977. He was a long-time employee of the U.S. Postal Service from 1972 through his retirement in 2002 and worked as a systems maintenance engineer for 30 years.
On October 19, 1968, he and Judy were married and briefly lived in Fort Worth, Texas before making their home in Norman, Oklahoma. Gene and Judy celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2018. Gene loved to bowl and play golf and was very passionate about the Oklahoma Sooners football and basketball teams. He was a voracious reader, which was his favorite hobby. Gene was an absolute master in the kitchen and his blueberry pancakes and chocolate chip cookies were specialties that brought people far and wide into the Hunter home to sample. Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Judith, of the Norman home; a daughter, Teresa Michele “Mikki” Nicholson and her husband Nick of Sugar Land, Texas; a daughter, Kari Marie Moody and her husband Paul of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister-in-law, Odeana Hunter of Midwest City; his nieces and nephews, Jackie King and her husband Bob; Jan Thomas and her husband Jason; Francina Moody; Harold Hunter; Terry Hunter and his wife Peggie; William Gepfert; numerous cousins as well as two step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. His father, mother, and two brothers, Harold and H.B., and H.B.’s wife Jody, preceded him in death.
