Mary Margaret McClendon Redman passed peacefully on Monday, October 4, 2021at her home in Norman surrounded by close family. Mary had just turned ninety-four years old. Mary was born on September 21st, 1927 in Enid, Oklahoma the second of two children of Anna Owen McClendon and Posey Young McClendon. Mary grew up in Oklahoma City and attended John Carroll Parish school. Mary was always an active outgoing competitive girl who enjoyed sports, girl scouts, cheerleading and working part time to earn extra money during her high school years. As soon as she graduated from High School, she entered nurse’s training at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. Mary graduated from St. Anthony’s Nurse’s training in 1948. She then passed her state boards and became a certified registered nurse. Shortly there-after, she was able to secure her dream job at St. Anthony’s Hospital in the pediatrics department.
While working at St Anthony’s, Mary met Lavern “Red” Redman. Red was a senior at Oklahoma University majoring in Geology and a World War II Veteran. Red and Mary were married on September 3rd, 1949 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Oklahoma City. Mary and Red spent the next five years moving to various oil patch locations in Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. They had two children, Harold and Linda, during that time.
In 1955, Red had an opportunity to further his Geology Career in foreign locations. Over the next 15 years, the family lived in Colombia, Italy, and Canada. Mary enjoyed the challenge of living in these foreign locations learning the various cultures, sites, and customs. While living in Colombia, Mary became a very avid accomplished golfer winning over 35 golf tournament trophies.
In the 1970’s the family moved back to the US and lived in New York, Houston, and Tulsa. Mary worked for the American Red Cross in Tulsa as a nurse in blood donations and tissue retrieval for approximately 20 years. She retired from the Red Cross in 1987. While living in Tulsa, they enjoyed golfing, fishing, and boating with their grandchildren at area lakes.
In 2007, Mary and Red moved to Norman to be closer to family. Since moving to Norman, Mary has been busy enjoying family and friends, gardening, and doing a variety of craft and sewing projects. Mary was a member of St. Thomas More University Parish in Norman.
Mary lived independently in her Norman home until she fell 4 months’ a go and severely injured her back. Complications from those injuries ultimately lead to her death.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years (Red), parents (Anna and Posey) and sister Martha Mae. She is survived by son Harold and Peggy of Houston; daughter Linda and Lonnie of Newcastle, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson and 3 nephews and a niece. Services are to be coordinated by Primrose Funeral Home, Norman, Oklahoma.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 8, 2021 at St. Thomas More University Parish and Student Center. Graveside will follow the service at Blanchard Cemetery in Blanchard, Oklahoma. Family will greet friends at the Funeral Home on Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. The family has requested all attendees wear masks while at the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service
