OBITUARY
Leon Powell
4 March, 1932 – 25 August, 2023
IN THE CARE OF
Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens
Leon Powell, age 91, passed away peacefully at home on August 25, 2023.
Leon was born March 4, 1932 and raised in Winchester, Kentucky. In 1947, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After his discharge, he moved to Virginia to be near his brother Leonard. Shortly after, he began working for the railroad. Originally the old Virginia Line, and continued his career as it evolved into Norfolk and Western, and eventually into the now Norfolk Southern Railroad. After serving 42 years, in 1994 he retired from his position as a coal dumper operator.
In his later life, Leon loved his daily rides in the car, his morning Hardee’s sausage biscuit, playing lottery scratchers, and getting hot dogs or hamburgers for lunch or dinner. He treasured his time on the front porch, basking in the warm sun and conversing with his family.
Leon was predeceased by his father Sidney and mother Lucy, a daughter, Karen, 1 brother, 3 sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews, along with many old friends.
He is survived by his wife, June, 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
At his request, in lieu of services, a private “celebration of life” will be held with family.
A special Thank-You to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for the Powell family.
