Carey Lee White, affectionately known as “Butch” was called home to glory early Wednesday morning, September 20, 2017. He peacefully departed this world in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ whom he loved, praised, and worshipped daily. Carey was born in Norfolk, Virginia on October 27, 1943 to James Pete and Mertha Lee White.
Carey was educated in the Norfolk School System and was a devoted alumni of Booker T. Washington High School. He received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Norfolk State University. He had several different careers, US Army, Nursing, Teaching, Modeling, and Singing. His career as a Nurse began in Washington DC and later ended in Norfolk VA with Sentara Hospital. His teaching career started as a substitute at various schools within the Hampton Roads areas. Butch loved working with the children but soon gave that challenge up for a more exciting and rewarding career; modeling and singing; two things that he loved most. As a devoted member of Olive Grove Baptist Church, he served in the Male Chorus, EF White Gospel Choir, Appointed For Praise Community Choir, Hospitality Ministry, and was a former member of the Senior Missionary Society where he served as Secretary for four years. Carey, sometimes called “Mr. GQ”, modeled and sang for the Senior Missionary Society at Olive Grove Fashion Show for 15 years. Another talent of Carey’s was acting. He was casted in several plays sponsored by various churches in the Oakwood/Norview community. He always looked forward to participating in the “musical workshops” and helping others bring the community together. He gave his best in everything that he did and will truly be missed for his infectious smile and humbleness.
Carey is predeceased by his parents, James and Mertha; brothers, Clarence (Pete), Clifton, Harold, and Bobby (Chunky); sister, Zadie Williams; brother in laws, Bernard J. Hughes, Sr. and David L. Williams; and niece, Judy White.
Carey leaves to cherish and honor his memory, sisters, Viole Brown (Kenneth), Sandria Hughes, and Sheila (Sissy) White, nephews and nieces, two special cousins, Carl Heckstall and Kenneth Flythe, two spiritual mothers, Louise Miller and Martha Owens, two special friends, Rev. Joyce Martin and Ruth Reid and a host of other family members and friends.
The Fallen Limb
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest.
Remembering all, how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small.
Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls.
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes we’re together again.
