Jeanne was born in Scotland Neck NC on 30 December 1942, the daughter of Arthur K. Leggett and Eudora Helms Leggett.
On 30 August 1964 she married James Frederick (Fred/Freddy) Stevenson of nearby Palmyra NC. Following a short honeymoon in Williamsburg, VA. Jeanne began her long teaching career at Roosevelt School in Garfield Heights OH while her husband, as a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant, completed his doctoral program at Case Institute of Technology. Jeanne was made a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar during this period.
Jeanne moved to New Jersey with her husband in November 1969 when he joined the research and development staff of Bell Telephone Laboratories in Whippany NJ.
She interrupted her teaching career to serve as at-home mom for their NJ-born daughters Virginia and Elizabeth. Thereafter she taught in the Boonton NJ school system and briefly, until interrupted by the Islamic Revolution, at the Piruzzi International School in Tehran, Iran her husband was on the special assignment to American Bell International. On returning to the USA, she continued teaching in the Boonton school system. After building their house in Blairstown in 1988. She taught at Frelinghuysen Township School until her retirement. In the years after her retirement, she delighted in following the progress and successes of many of her former students.
Jeanne and Fred have been longtime "in the pews every Sunday" communicants of Christ Church Episcopal, Newton NJ and earlier of St John's Episcopal, Boonton NJ.
During her long struggle, Jeanne was greatly encouraged and comforted by the outpouring calls, cards, notes, flowers, gifts, treats, and visits from: family, close neighbors, earliest NJ friends from garden apartment days, teaching associates, and friends from Christ Church. These she personally responded to so long as she was able.
Jeanne was predeceased by her parents and sister Nancy Leggett Stevenson. She is survived by: Nancy's husband Richard C. Stevenson, and Nancy's children by a former marriage; brother Arthur Leggett and wife Kathy and their children; daughter Virginia Leggett Stevenson (husband John McGuire) and children Antonia and Catherine and stepson Clay; daughter Elizabeth Sanders and children Graham, Cordelia, Samuel, and Lucia.
There will be no funeral-related events in NJ; instead, these will occur in NC.
A memorial service will be held at Letchworth-Sykes Funeral Home, 101 W 7th St, Scotland Neck, NC 27874 on August 3, 2024 at 10:00am.
Burial will be in Stevenson II plot of gravesites at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery near Scotland Neck NC.
