Born in Orange, TX on June 16, 1952 Owen graduated from Bridge City High School in Bridge City, TX and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point,NY. He also attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band. Owen worked for 20 years as a Mechanical Engineer in the chemical and oil industries. Following that he was a math and science teacher for 15 years at Bunker Hill High School in Claremont, NC.
Owen commissioned from the United States Military Academy at West Point as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. As an Armor Officer, Owen served with 1-37 Armor, 1st Armored Division in Germany and 1-67 Armor, 2nd Armored Division, stationed in Ft Hood, TX, discharging honorably at the rank of Captain.
Owen was very active in his church participating in Children's Ministries and teaching children's Sunday school. He was also well known in the Newton and Hickory communities as our favorite Santa. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Owen left an impact on many lives and will dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Owen is survived by his wife of 24 years, Joy Everett, daughter Tracy Garlinghouse and husband John of Belmont, NC, daughter Kelly Gilbert and husband Terry of Vale, NC; grandchildren Jake Ervin, Liam Garlinghouse, Ethan Garlinghouse, Abigail Garlinghouse, Adrian Garlinghouse, Andrew Garlinghouse, and Sophia Welch and husband Brad; great grandchildren Oliver and Benjamin Andreassen and soon to be Jackson Welch; sister Terri Barclay and husband, Carey from Beaumont, TX, sister Cindy Clay and husband Russell from Lewisville, TX, and brother Steve Everett and wife Leslie Silvers from El Sobrante, CA. Nieces and nephews Lindsay Robins and husband David, Krista Goetz and husband Austin, Ashley Woodson and husband Bryan, Jeff Scott Everett, Derrick Miller and wife Ryan, Chance Everett, Hunter Clay and wife Danielle. Great Nieces and nephews Addyson Bolton, Cael Everett, Carter Woodson, Emerson Robins, Anabelle Miller, Kolton Goetz, Finnley Woodson, Robert “Bobby” Miller, Everett Clay. Owen is preceded in death by his father and mother John and Mary Everett of Bridge City, TX.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, 1pm at Denver United Methodist Church, Denver, NC. inurnment will be conducted at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. The service will be available through live stream on the Denver UMC Facebook. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Children's Ministries at Denver UMC.
