Born March 24, 1933 in Gaston County, NC, he was the son of the late Reverend Frank Ernest and Flossie Pearl Armstrong Self.
Pappy enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1955 as a Navy Seabee. While serving in the Navy, he was a fire captain, military escort, and big truck mechanic. He was also a racecar driver at the Lincoln County Raceway and was a 66 year member of the Cherryville New Year Shooter. He was also an organ and tissue donor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise McGill Self and five siblings.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 7 years, Janice Sheriffield Self; Son, David Bernard Self, Jr. of Lincolnton; Daughters, Beverly Self Dalrymple, and husband, David, of Lincolnton, Theresa Self Milburn-Shook and John Langley of Boiling Springs; Stepson, Jerry Ernest Hawkins, Jr., of Troutman, Stepdaughter, Melissa Michelle Diamond and fiancée, Jamie Pressley of Mt. Holly; Grandchildren, Bradley Sigmon and fiancée, Shannon Parker, Brian Dalrymple and wife, Kimberly, Shaun Dalrymple and fiancée, Whitney Mathis, Crystal Dalrymple, Joshua Self, Joshua Milburn, Scotty Shook, Dillon Pressley, Taylor Pressley, Hunter Diamond, Jerry Hawkins, III, Sarah Hawkins, Noah Hawkins, Travis Langley, Nicki Langley Stewart, 16 Great-grandchildren and 2 Great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Covenant Bible Church with the Reverend Nathan Grooms officiating and burial, with military rites, will follow at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at his former home at 724 Third Street, Lincolnton, NC, on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
