Born January 30, 1925, in Bayonne, NJ, he was the son of the late James Joseph Sharkey and Agnes O’Neill Sharkey.
Bernard was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Army in the 563rd AAA AW BN, Battery C during WWII. He served in Europe during the war and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was currently serving as president of the 563rd “Brunch Bunch” and Chaplain of Post 16, American Legion in Newton, NC. He was an active participant at the American Legion dances every Friday and Saturday night.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Sharkey; brothers, William Sharkey, James Sharkey, John Sharkey; and sister, Mary Wright.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Bernadette Duncan and husband, Darryl of Lincolnton, NC, Cathleen H. Dillingham and husband, Scott of Terrell, NC, Patty Sullivan of Florida; stepdaughter, Melanie York and husband, Bill of Florida; grandchildren, Jesse Duncan, Joseph Duncan, Savannah Hefner, McKenzie Hefner, Victoria Hefner, Christina Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, and step-grandchild, Sarah York.
The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Newton, with Deacon Scott Gilfillan officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.
