On December 1, 1989 in Panorama City, CA John and Katrina Villarreal were blessed with the birth of their firstborn son, John Ricardo Villarreal. Because he was born into a family of numerous Johns, his family gave him the nickname "Ricky". Ricky was raised in Sylmar, CA where he attended elementary, middle and high school. While growing up, he enjoyed playing baseball at Santa Rosa Baseball League, camping in Yosemite and fishing with his father. At age ten, Ricky's parents had another child, and he became big brother to Vincent; he was so excited. At age fifteen, Ricky's father passed away and he immediately stepped up to provide a father figure for his little brother. He did his best to take care of his mother, often times putting aside his wants so he could help in the home with his brother. As Ricky grew older, he began to coach, just as his father did. He continued the love of camping and fishing, being a Dodger fan and cheering on the Chargers. In 2011, Ricky became ill. He faced his illness with strength and courage, the same way he faced life. He never complained and always kept a smile. Over the last 2 years, the doctors and nurses of USC cared for John in such a special way, that he thought of them as not just caregivers, but friends. On September 16, 2013 at Keck Hospital in Los Angeles, while surrounded by all his family and closest friends, Ricky went to be with his father in heaven.
Ricky is survived by his mother, Katrina Villarreal; his brother, Vincent Villarreal; his grandparents, John and Barbara Estrada, and Rosa Villarreal; his godchildren, Nathan Hernandez and Gabriela Estrada; his aunts and uncles, Elizabeth Nuunez, Javier Villarreal, Teresa Estrada, Jose Villarreal, Anthony Villarreal, Rosita Villarreal, John (Raquel) Estrada, and Beatrice Villarreal; his cousins, Samuel, Sarina, J.J., Gabie, Maricela, Maria, Deanna, Reyanna, Jasmine, Becky, Anabel, Bobby, Elias, Emily, Emmanuel, Matthew, Devon, Juju, Bella, Robert, Juanito and Jimena.
He is preceded in death by his father, John D. Villarreal; his grandfather, Juan E. Villarreal; his uncle, Robert Villarreal; and his cousin, Javier Villarreal.
