Dorothy Mae Palm was born on April 24,1928 in Dubuque, Iowa, to Leborius and Helena Palm. She was the youngest of nine siblings. After graduating from St. Columbkille’s Catholic School in Dubuque in 1946, she worked as a secretary at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. and Spahn and Rose Lumber Co. In 1955 she married Donald Winter. Two years later they moved to So Calif. In 1966 they moved to Newhall, where she resided until her death.
Dorothy was a loving mother to four children. In 1975 she lost her oldest son, Dan in a motorcycle accident and in 1993 lost her beloved husband Donald to a heart attack. She married Jack Simon in 1994 and lost him five years later to cancer. She found freedom from life’s pain in her 12-step groups. Despite her many losses, she never lost her passion for life, the ability to light up a room when she entered and her faith in God and love for Jesus Christ
Dorothy was a familiar face at the SCV Senior Center for the past 23 years. She had many friends at the center and looked forward to seeing them at lunch every day. She was a member of a senior tap dance group that perform around town at various functions. Earlier in life she studied court reporting and was a medical record transcriber at County USC hospital. She spent much of her time in her later years with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. She loved traveling to Dubuque and Chicago to visit her sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by her husband of 38 yrs., Donald and her son Dan Winter. She also survived her second husband Jack Simon and three stepsons, as well as her parents, her siblings Robert, Marie, Callista, Clifford, Violet, Kenneth, Leroy and Cletus. She also survived her gentlemen friend of 10 years, Jimmy Giacanelli.
She is survived by her son Keith Winter of Port Angeles, WA. Daughters Pam Di Valerio (Bruce) of Stevenson Ranch, Dawn Misso (Tom) of Newhall and two stepdaughters Kelly and Teri. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Christopher (Karen) Di Valerio, Danika (Ly) Winter, Brian Di Valerio (Laura), Kevin (Tiffany) Di Valerio and Evan (Yana) Winter. As well as her six great grandchildren, Chase, Dallas, Easton, Zoey, Wyatt and Raisa.
Family and friend’s visitation will take place on Thursday, June 30th, 2022, from 5:00-8:00pm at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 Sierra Hwy, Newhall, Ca. Funeral mass will be said Friday, July 1st at 11:00 at St Clare’s Church 19606 Calla Wy., Canyon Country Ca. with a rosary being said before mass at 10:30. Reception to follow.
In Lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations being made to the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center in Dorothy Simon‘s name. We would like to thank LAC Fire Station 107, the staff at HMNMH emergency room, Med Surg department and the staff at Comfort Care In- Home care especially Myrna and Teresa for taking such good care of our Mom.
