Doris Yvonne Lister affectionately known to all as “Mama” was born in Logansport Louisiana July 6, 1933 to the union of Clyde and Matilda McDaniel. She was the third oldest of nine children; Hattie Mae (Pat), Doris Yvonne Lister, affectionately known to all as “Mama” was born in Logansport Louisiana July 6, 1933 to the union of Clyde and Matilda McDaniel. She was the third oldest of nine children; Hattie Mae (Pat), Elnorris, Finis, Charles, Beatrice (B), Maple, Carl and Opal. Doris attended CH Daniels on a full basketball scholarship, where she stayed with the Garett family (her principle) in order to stay in school and play basketball. In 1953 she married her high school sweetheart Willie Erving Lister; she had three children Debra Renee, Denise Darcel, & LeJon Joseph. Doris accepted Christ early in her life and made sure that He remained the center of her life as she aged. She often spent many nights into the mornings praying and praising the Lord, thanking God for all that he had brought her through in her life.
Doris was determined to stand on her own two feet and make a good life for herself and her children. Doris often times worked more than one job to support her family. Many knew her as the beautiful smile behind the window at the world famous Johnny’s Pastrami located in Los Angeles, CA where she worked for over twenty years.
Doris spent her life devoted to her family ensuring that once she raised her children she was there to assist in rearing her grandchildren in being an instrumental part of their lives. After living in Compton, CA for over fifteen years she relocated to Palmdale, CA to be near her children and grandchildren. Doris was a devout Laker fan. If you knew her, you knew not to call or disturb her while her Lakers were on, especially if they were losing. On any given game day, you could find her in front of the TV with her Lakers gear, Pepsi, and homemade greens and hot water corn bread; it was almost as if she had stock in the Lakers Organization.
Doris made her final transition home on March 10, 2015. She is preceded in death by her parents; Clyde and Matilda McDaniel, siblings Hattie Mae, Elnorris, Finis, Charles, Beatrice, Maple, and Carl. She leaves to cherish her memory her soul surviving sister Opal McDaniel; three children: daughter – Debra Bell, Denise Allen (Kenny), Son - LeJon Johnson (DeSonia); Fourteen grandchildren- Anthony Clark, Lamont Clark (Faye), Dameion Allen, Courtney Williams (Rico), Azurdee Allen, Adrienne Allen, Lejon Johnson Jr. (Sarah), Kiara Perry, Janay Johnson, Medrick Bell, Shonyae Johnson, Charity Johnson, Chastity Johnson, Ahmari Johnson; Nineteen great grandchildren and three great – great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
