Born and raised in Brooklyn, Dr. Thomas “Bruce” Birkenhead had a life-long passion for the theater, teaching, military history, and British culture. Graduating from James Madison High School in 1949, (the alma mater of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Judge Judy), Bruce went on to complete a BA (1954) and MA (1958) at Brooklyn College, and a PhD in economics at the New School for Social Sciences (1963).
His career spanned 40 years across two equally demanding fields. As an academic, he was a lecturer and eventually professor of Economics at Brooklyn College from 1957 to 1975 and became Dean of the School of Social Studies, (1972-1975). He taught economics within the Performing Arts Management MFA program at Brooklyn College, one of the first professional programs of its kind, and co-authored the first book on the same subject (Economics of the Broadway Theater, 1966). He received the best teacher award from Brooklyn College in 1999 and a scholarship fund was established to recognize his contributions to the field of performing arts management. His former students today head leading arts organizations across the United States.
At the same time, Bruce pursued his love of the theater, starting with his work in regional theater at the Cape Cod Melody Tent, where he worked with such luminaries as Elaine Stritch, Joan Rivers and Leonard Nimoy. As a company manager with Iron Mountain Productions, one of Broadway’s leading production companies, he managed Broadway, regional and international tours of many shows, notably “Ain’t Misbehavin’, Master Harold and the Boys, and Brighton Beach Memoirs. He was a member of the Negotiating Committee of American Theatrical Press Agents and Managers union (ATPAM).
Bruce is survived by five children, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his beloved wife Maria Martins Birkenhead and many wonderful memories of this complex, talented, and caring man.
