As unimaginably difficult as this year must have been, hopefully you were, and still are, able to find a small bit of peace somewhere each day to help you through. But even if you can’t, that’s okay.

The love you will always have for Patty is expressed so eloquently in your words about her, in sharing what an amazing wife and beautiful person she was (and will remain) to you. Even in showcasing her artwork for others to appreciate - the memorial website you and Charles Ryder have started is really wonderful.

My thoughts are with you, with your family and friends of Patty’s, and will continue to be most especially in the coming days, as an anniversary marking the death of a loved one can have such an intensity to it; amplifying the time gone by and the sadness endured now that they are no longer here. But may there be some solace found in that Patricia lives on in the memories of the people she loved and who continue to love her.

I know I'm late and don't know if you will  see this, but my deepest condolences, Mr. Johnnie Ethan Philips, to you and the rest of your family. You brought me many moments of joy and hope and inspiration as Neelix on Voyager and humor and healing as the astronaut on Avenue Q so I wanted to make sure to take the time to thank you and offer sympathies and respect at this time for you and your family and  all who were touched by Patricia.


May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

It is Valentine's and I'm watching Voyager.....I continue to watch this series and love the character you so wonderfully  portrayed.  Your character's love for Kess reminds me of mine for my wife Erin.  I just discovered the sad news of Patricia's passing not too long ago. 
I know that a great actor draws inspiration from their own life and brings that to the character they play.  It is obvious that you tapped into your deep love for Tricia. I offer my terribly belated condolences to you and your family.  I am so fortunate that I am able to hug my darling wife tonight but I want you to know that I will be thinking  of you and Tricia and share my love with you both.

I regret that I didn't get to know Patty well enough -- we are so very sorry for your loss.

I do have a memory of meeting her at your Burbank home -- you and I had a rehearsal scheduled, you were running a few minutes late. She welcomed me in and invited me to sit. I believe I sat down on the sofa: and that's when I first noticed THE BOOKS.  

The walls were lined from floor to ceiling with BOOKS. I was in awe of it. It quickly became a topic of conversation, we shared a laugh and I feel I got to know her a bit from that short 'BOOK talk' we had that day.

I cannot think of her without that first image of all those neatly stacked and stacked books.

John, I’m so sorry about Patty. She was such a dear soul, always genuinely interested in what you were doing or saying, making you her focus. Our trip to Scotland together is one of my fondest memories.  Sending love.

Maggie and I were so sorry to hear the news of your loss, Johnnie. While we never had a chance to meet your dearest Patricia, we can certainly imagine what an amazing person she must've been, if only because she was your wife for so many years. It takes a kind and special person to see the same in another, and we're so glad you two got to have such love together. Undoubtedly, she will always with you in all kinds of ways. Our hearts and thoughts are beaming positive energy and virtual hugs your way.   

I will always remember the pearls of wisdom from Patty, her amazing paintings, the care of the pups, and her love of Johnnie.

I first met Patricia at the Silver Center of Fountain House. The Silver Center focuses on working with and supporting members of Fountain House who are 55 and over.  I was the Program Director of the Center.  Patricia wanted to bring joy and energy into the lives of our seniors, so she started a weekly "How Music Makes Me Feel" Group.  She knew her music!  She would play the desired tunes, and many would sing along or just listen to her unending musical knowledge.  In the mix, Patricia would talk about her life, her trips and her husband.  To this day the music still plays in our Senior Center every week.  Thank you, Patricia, for sharing your gifts with us.

Aunt Patty was someone I always felt a deep connection with. She had the spirit of an artist, and always supported and encouraged me in my artistic pursuits. She was a passionate supporter, and was always there with praise and reassurance.  She was brilliant, witty, and hilarious. I always looked forward to our conversations about art, music or films. She was truly one of a kind, just like my Uncle John, and she will be so very  missed. 

I have delayed writing this as I worry I don't put across how much Patricia touched our lives from afar, we shared funny texts often and she always made me smile. Patricia expressed great love for her Scottish family and with me she always championed my daughter Rachael which meant everything to me. I'm so glad to have had the brief times with her as she will stay with me forever,  particularly the love, affection and humour.  She will be sorely missed. 

Laura and I are forever grateful for our friendship with Johnny and Patty.   We look forward to many more reunions in the hereafter.  I grieve for you Johnny, my dearest friend.  Patty will always be your soulmate.

Johnny, I always understood the intensity with which you have embraced life and squeezed every moment with your passion. It is what drove you to the stage. How to understand the passion with which you loved your partner may be difficult for many but not for me. Your passion for life and people has always been at the forefront of who you are. Your loss cannot be measured, it cannot be calculated, and it cannot be contained. I can say I am sorry for the loss of your partner but that seems so trite in light of the feelings and emotions I know you are feeling now. I waited to send a note because having lost family and parents, I know that the pain, the real pain, only begins after all the flowers wilt and everyone has returned to their routines and you are alone with your grief. I feel that pain and want you to know that while it doesn’t go away, what returns around it are memories and cherish those going forward, your friend, Chuck 

Patty was one of the kindest human beings I ever knew. Gone way too soon. 

I have so many wonderful memories of Aunt Patty. From my earliest memories when she taught me how to needlepoint to the care with which she hosted us in your beautiful homes in upstate NY and later in Burbank to our more recent family gatherings once we were all living in NYC. Aunt Patty was a rare and beautiful soul—quiet, but so charming and so funny when she opened up. More than anything, I will remember her generosity of spirit and the way she would ask questions about people’s life with a genuine curiosity to hear the answers and engage. She is very loved and very missed! 

I remember Patty with great fondness. I hope that her memory will live on and that people will recall her kindness and gentleness, her shyness, her coy laugh along with her loving and caring way of displaying her admiration and amazement for her husband Johnnie and his routines and jokes.  I will never forget sitting in a restaurant in Burbank near their California home and laughing with Patty to beat the band.  I remember visiting Johnnie and Patty in their NYC home with the beautiful view of the Hudson River and noting how peaceful and contented she seemed. She was witty and talented and gifted. We will miss you, sweet Patty! Rest in peace, gentle one!

I admired and loved Patty from the moment I met her:  her kindness, sense of humor, unabashed compassionate politics, love of books and her beautiful art, which she shared with me by email and which will live on as her legacy.    I hope that heaven is an endless art gallery for Patty and that she wanders through it peacefully and at her leisure.  This world was never meant for one as beautiful as Patty.

When I think of Patty now I realize how she often managed to be cautiously present and fiercely bold at the same time. That’s a neat trick, and I always felt that it was her kindness and generosity that  held the  contradiction together. Patty never rushed to center stage (she had Johnnie for that!), but she always knew who she was… and she was unwaveringly true to herself and others.

I knew Patty more through Johnnie than through my own interactions with her, and I was always touched by his unfailingly deep love for her, from their first dates through her last days. They were everything to each other. It was - and continues to be - a love that will never end.

I did not know Patty but I did know how Johnnie loved her, cherished her and cared for her in so many ways. In life, Patty was always in his thoughts and I don't think that will ever change. Love knows no bounds.

Patty was a special being. She was without doubt the light of Johnnie’s life. I will remember her delicate Scottish beauty; her talent as a painter; her affection for the band Nine Inch Nails; her dry wit; her enormous generosity of heart and spirit; her quiet calm; her loyal friendship; and her fierce and abiding love for Johnnie.

I’m reminded of the many holidays and birthdays spent with Patty and Johnnie. Thanksgiving dinners at The Smokehouse, Christmas Eve at The Palm, a weekend trip to Lake Arrowhead to celebrate my birthday one snowy November, a day at the beach in Ventura.

Ever since I was a little kid, I thought Patty was the coolest person. She was quirky, funny, outspoken, and so unique. I missed her and Johnnie dearly when they moved to New York. But years later, I was lucky enough to move east and into an apartment just a few blocks away from them. I’m very grateful for the time we’ve spent together in the last few years, even if those treasured moments were far between. I will miss Patty very much. Johnnie loved her with the deepest love a person can feel and I wish him love and comfort.

Johnnie and Patty were a huge part of my childhood. They were there for me during my most formative years, always nurturing, supportive, and encouraging. I am gutted that Patty is gone. It doesn’t feel quite real. Patty, I carry you in my heart. Johnnie, all my love to you forever.

I met Patty only once or twice.  If memory serves, the first meeting was on Florida "Isola Madre."  My very strong impression was of a woman who was--at the same time--intensely shy and singularly bold.  I do know that she was my friend, Johnnie Pillips's Life.

We met Patty 32 years ago.  The things we loved about her were her resolve.  We took a 6 hr very difficult open water canoe paddle.  She never complained.  So strong.   Her beauty  her hair  and all the inside goodness too.  When she and John would come to the river we had our girl time.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Patty, but l felt I knew her through Johnnie's words, expressions, laughter, and his eyes.  I can hardly remember a conversation that Johnnie and I had when he didn't talk about Patty and somehow mention her wit, her talent, her beauty, her person.  So, by the pictures he painted of her I felt that I knew her well. His love for her made me feel that he was indeed the luckiest man on earth.  

Patty was always so welcoming and generous to us.
Dinners shared with you both were filled with smiles, laughs and warmth. It was clear the bond between you two was strong; fortified by the many years you shared together, built on love and nurturing respect.
An astute artist, wickedly smart and funny, it was a tremendous compliment to be accepted and welcomed in by her.
She moved on, on her terms…as it should be.
While we are comforted by the knowledge that she is at peace, we mourn the loss of our dear friend’s love.

I am so very saddened that the sensational Patty has left us. I first met her when she was my neighbor in Toluca Lake in 1998. She and Johnnie were such a fantastic snazzy pair! So fun and interested and exciting. But Patty was just… so cool! I was reminiscing with my friend Lilley the other day, and we both in unison used that same phrase about her! I can still see her in her winter coat and sunglasses walking the dogs. We would chat and catch up. And laugh. It seems so unbelievable that she has gone. My heart goes out to wonderful kind loving funny sensitive Johnnie. And I will never forget dear Patty. 

Johnnie is a dear friend of many years. To be invited to the house to hear Johnnie play his sax or to talk about books was a treat because Patty would welcome me and warmth and comfort would instantly be felt.  My memory of Patty is to say that she made it a home. I love you my friend. She was your center. I am sorry for your profound loss. 

I did not know Patty as well as I knew Johnnie during our time together. However. To know Johnnie is to know Patty. The love in his voice and eyes when he talked about her was only out matched by the love you could see when they were together. The pain of this loss, I pray, will be overwhelmed with the celebration of her life and the shared moments, the humor, the inspiring powerful dedication  through the craziness of life. My love and prayers go out to you Johnnie, and to all who were blessed by her presence in this world.

Chris and I send our prayers and deepest sympathies to you on the loss of Patty, the love of your life. While I never met Patty, I can imagine the many amazing times you had together, including hiking through the highlands, eating dinner at swanky restaurants, or just traveling to have a new adventure. I also picture Patty “beaming you you in” through the kitchen entrance or gathering the mail from the hallway table. Ha!! She will be so missed by everyone who was close to her - your description of her life and personality brought tears to our eyes. Please know that we are here for you and always available to help out. John, you and I so many hilarious moments together in our “early days” that I know your humor, kindness, and optimism, with the help of family and friends, will carry you through this difficult time.

I am so sorry for your unfathomable loss. 
Patty was the center of your life for 32 years. 
I know that Patty was a professional stylist for many years and that explains her deep understanding of the elements of style . She was always beautifully dressed, with attention to fabric, color and texture, in stark contrast to you, John, who wore the same baseball cap for years on end. 
Later in life, Patty joined you more infrequently at social gatherings, so it was a particular delight for me to see her at the east coast party celebrating my marriage to Elizabeth in October of 2019. 
She looked impeccable as she chatted enthusiastically with me, my daughters and other old friends.  Her desire to meet Elizabeth had outweighed her shyness and she radiated happiness for us.
That is the way I will always remember her.

I had the privilege of meeting Patty only once - at a lively dinner following a 1989 play where John was in the cast. But I know from many conversations with John (whom I've known since 1975) what an enormous difference she made in his life. I could tell that this was a woman who could draw this man out of his isolation, who loved him and in turn was loved, a companion for travel and other life adventures. Hearing about Patty and her family always made me want to join them on a trek through Scotland, where I'm sure her beautiful spirit resides.

I became aware of this fact when I  first  saw her paintings, before we even met in person.  I deeply regret that Stacey and I, didn't get to know her better. I never had a chance to meet Patty but through Johnny’s words, while we were working on a film. There wasn’t a day on set when he didn’t mention Patty. Hearing, among other things, that Patty and Johnny loved to read, and that she was an artist, gave me the certainly that she was a wonderful human being.

I met Pat many times while I was visiting Johnny in Burbank. With few exceptions, She would stay with us shortly and then moved on to do her thing. She was always very nice and one could tell the vibrant mind and steadfast independence behind everything she would say or do. Her opinions seemed to be the fabric of her existence and it was always obvious that she means what she says. Her warmth in connection with people was natural like breathing, and matter-of-fact like beating of once’s heart. Her deep connection with Johnny could never be missed, even if one would talk with just one of them. It was beautiful. I was always hoping to see her in New York, but it was not meant to be. 

Dear Johnnie, words can't express the sadness I feel at Patricia's passing, and the grief you are experiencing. I know that you two had a very special bond, it was clear every time I had the pleasure of being with the both of you. I always remember the twinkle in her eye on those too few occasions when we three were together. I remember also, meeting her parents and noting how sweet they were to me and not being surprised that Patricia was the daughter of such lovely people. I will respect the time you need to grieve in private. I hope that we can talk as soon as you are able to. You are in my prayers. Patty had a kind, gentle, and lovely spirit. She also had a way of looking at this world with a kind of unique irony - this was a great gift of hers. I could ask her about anything under the sun and she would always have a unique response - one filled with declarative humor and biting wit. She was kind, she loved her friends and most especially Johnnie who she seemed to worship with a ferocity unique to them. She was also a great lover of her puppies. I never saw Patty without a conversation about her lovely furry family members. God bless her and all the love that continues to emanate from her bright bright light.

Aunt Patty was the coolest Aunt and most fun to hang out with. My last text from her was filled with compliments on how I’ve turned out so well and become a great father. She always had my back and built me up. Our family will miss her dearly.

I remember Patty’s sweetness, her warmth, and her wry sense of humor. She’d rather lift up others than toot her own horn. Her commitment to her art was inspiring.  The love and devotion she and John brought forth is a light for us all.  Love never dies. 

Aunt Patty was the coolest!  She was so much fun to hang out with during our summers in Maine, listening to the B 52s or New Order.  “It’s a party!”  She was such an inspiration to all of us cousins - we all get older but can still always stay joyful, fun and young at heart.  

My life has been forever  blessed by the loyal friendship, generosity and bottomless love of Patty and John. 
How she ever put up with me hanging around  in California for years I’ll never know…

I still laugh when I think how she told me many times I needed to get nicer clothes or a better haircut or how, in the middle of the night, she’d fire off emails  leading me to some unknown fact about the Beatles, one of our common obsessions. 

To say she will be missed is an understatement.  Its almost impossible to think of her gone, but after her struggle these past months I know that she has found some level of peace.

fifty years. I have so many stories and memories that I have to edit before I write my condolence message so I don’t crash this site.

Ancient history!

I spent a few weeks with Johnnie and Patty at their apartment in Washington Heights the year Patty had hip surgery. I was there to take care of her, but it should come as no surprise to anyone who knew Patty that she decided I was there so that she could take care of me. She was working on a series of bird portraits in gouache that winter, and I asked her if she would paint a snowy owl for me. And she did. She was both a very private person and a very generous one, a mystery girl, one who made everybody else feel special. She was special. I loved her.

I had the honor of being Patty and Johnny’s personal trainer for years. She was such a delicate presence, with an often impish mischievousness that always put me at jolly ease. When Johnny and I decided to watch horror films or kick around ideas, Patty would usually float in with that knowing smile. We were hard at work, contorting to figure out our stories, and she knew what we needed. A refreshment, and a little mirth with a twinkle in her eye. 

I didn’t know Patty intimately, but I heard again and again how much Johnny loved her, and I witnessed his care, his worry, his humor - all forms of nourishment that lifted and supported her.  Through Johnny’s devotion I grew to love who she was to him. 

She will be missed and never forgotten. 

Aunt Patty was a rare and special human. I, too, remember well the first time we met when Matt and I went to California, but the many years since have blessed us with memories of her artistic soul, her loving and thoughtful nature, and her special charm and wit. I remain grateful for the time she doted on Avery (who was just 11 days old!) while in Maine, and I was too tired and still recovering to manage all well. That seemingly simple gift has bound my heart to her forever. Lots of love to one stellar lady!

Thank you, Patty, for welcoming me to NYC all those years ago and introducing me to a place where I felt I belonged.  I remember the times when I'd be low and you would stay on the phone with me for an hour or so, not talking, but just *being* together. It meant so much. I don't know if you ever realized just how much I copied you. I love you and I will miss you, my big sister.

Having Patty in my life was such a great joy. I’ll miss seeing her and hearing her stories. Her wild spirit and love of life and people is still an inspiration. I’m so happy that I got to be a small part of this great woman’s journey 

Aunt Patty you were so so so special to me.  Thank you endlessly for everything you helped me with . I will miss you so much, but I know you are at peace now . 

Patty - you will be missed.    You had an adventurous spirit and a passion for life and lived it to the fullest.    I still have a drawing that you did years ago, probably during High School or not long after.    Thanks for the travel tips too.   You will forever be in the hearts of your friends and family.

I have three vivid Aunt Patty memories:

1) When she first visited Maine she sat with myself and other cousins and taught us how to do needlepoint of a loon on a lake. I think the needlepoint is either on the mantle in Maine now, or is in Uncle John’s apartment. 

2) Missy and I remember visiting You guys in California In spring of 2001.  We arrived at your house early and Aunt Patty hung with us until you got home. She told us tons of funny stories about her wild years as a stylist in NYC in the early 80s!

3) I remember her gently holding Avery in the picture above a few weeks after Avery was born in 2012, and seeing the smile on her face.  

We love and miss you Aunt Patty!  It’s a party!   

We love Patty with all our hearts. Our many excursions in NYC and LA and San Francisco were so joyous.,, especially with Patty’s wit and brilliant sense of humor. She always made us laugh so hard with her dry delivery.

Patti was such a badass.  
She never gave a joke away.  She was the Sweetest.  I learned to never compliment something she wore or created because she immediately bequeathed it to me.’ All my favourite lipsticks were hers.  I will save a few and happily wear the others till they are gone.
After getting her final diagnosis she said matter of dactyl, “it’s okay , I’m not afraid , it is what it is”.
Grace under fire.  Not surprising.

Johnnie's my oldest friend but I only met Patty once.  I remember thinking she had a sort of hipness that wouldn't have been out of place in a 50's style coffeehouse.  And a friendly manner that put me at ease.  Johnnie's affection for her was clear.  Just glad you both had as many  wonderful years as you did. Peace be with you. 

In March 2000, I met Patty when my college boyfriend and I stayed with Johnnie and Patty for a couple of nights. She told me rather pointedly while cooking dinner that I was the catch, not the boyfriend. A couple of years later, I visited again, and Patty gave me free rein of her painting studio—it was the first time I used truly good quality oils and brushes. In the years since, Patty never ceased being generous, charming, and fun, and her art knowledge was extensive. And wow—if you could get her telling stories, you were in for a treat!

Robin and I are saddened by Patty’s passing. We are sending you our support during this time, and hope you find some comfort in knowing that she was greatly loved, as are you.

When I finally met Patty in Germany after years of hearing about her from you, Johnnie, I had begun to believe she didn't exist because I'd heard you speak of what an amazing soul she was for so many years but we could never arrange to be in the same place at the same time. In the first few seconds of meeting her, the reason she'd earned such mythical status was made clear: she existed and was present with every fiber of her being, she emanated love, kindness, and light. I base this on one gift since I didn't know her long or well; she listened intently to everything being said to her. I felt I was the only person in the room when I was talking to her. A rare gift. She cared and was in the moment to that extent. I knew she was a perfect soul mate for you, John, and loved her instantly for it. I'm a better person having met her and seen you and her together and the eternal love you have for each other. My deepest condolences and much love always, James

About a decade ago Patty was sweet and supportive as Johnnie directed the reading of a play of mine in Burbank/LA.  I stayed with Patty and Johnnie for a week and Patty was welcoming, kind, sweet, and supportive.  Patty and Johnnie is a love story... a true love story.

My favorite memories of Patty are sneaking tokes and laughs in Maine and on the Cabrini building rooftop.  Also of the nice clothes she gave away to me that I still wear. 

In her quiet way, Patty was a joy to be around.  I will always treasure our comical political disagreements. She will be sorely missed, especially by the entire Phillips clan.

Aunt Patty was the best and so cool. One of my first memories of her was when my family went to LA to visit uncle Johnny on set for star trek. After the set visit aunt Patty took Chris and me to Disney land where we skipped ALL THE LINES and she rode every single rollercoaster with us! She was also just so fun and chill. For my 30th bday she gave me a Tibetan prayer flag that i still have hanging in my apartment.

I’ll always remember aunt patty’s sense of humor and her introducing me to one of my all time favorite movies - all dogs go to heaven.

My whole family was blessed by getting to know Patty.  I think of her sitting around our table (or cooking for me at hers!), and I smile.  She was a warm, compassionate, funny, kooky, loving human, and I am so grateful to have known her.  I know she is resting peacefully and surrounded by loving spirits and comfort.  My condolences to her family and friends on her passing, with prayers and peace sent your way.

Patty and John shared a rare playfulness in their adulthood. They also communicated with each other several times a day, also very rare in adults. Patty often worked behind the scenes helping JOHN and many others but it was her stepping centerstage during the grieving of the Phillips family when the mom had passed away that revealed this other very deep side of Patty. I had driven down from Boston for the funeral on Long Island and met John’s five sisters. As the Phillips family grieved I watched Patty move in and amongst them -organizing -feeding -holding -supporting them in this time of great loss. She became a benign hostess /sister who made sure that they would all get through this grieving together. We still need her now.

Rest well

The first time I met Patty was the summer Johnnie brought her up to our summer home in Maine.  She had to meet our whole family- which can be a little overwhelming to say the least!  She came i - looked us all over and declared- “It’s a party!”  My kids have never forgotten that!  It’s become one of our favorite expressions over the years!  We all miss our dear Patty- she was the love of Johnnie’s life and a dear sister to us all. She will be missed by everyone in our family. Sending so much love from Ree and Charlie 

I loved the clean sharp lines of Patty’s art and her kindness. I think she worried more than she needed to. She loved my friend John very much and love is the most important thing we leave behind. 

I will miss her. 

Patty was a precious, loving, well loved member of our family for more than thirty years. She was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known, always supportive and encouraging. She also had a wicked sense of humor and our last texts were about funny political people she thought I should follow on line. Patty and Johnnie loved each other dearly and it showed. Her passing leaves a hole in the fabric of our family. We will sorely miss her but take comfort in knowing she is at peace.

I can only hope that my husband's face lights up half as much as Johnnie's does when ever he talks about his beloved Patty! What a beautiful testament to a love that truly makes life worth living! Patty has clearly left her mark on the people she loved and they continue to spread that light, that light that comes from knowing such a soul! I have witnessed the deepest commitment, compassion and love from my dear friend Johnnie as he cared for and cherished Patty until the end, an example of inspiring and everlasting love! I hold all ur family in my heart xxx      

Patty brought so much joy to John (Ethan) from the first time they met. I am sad for her departure, but so happy to have known her. My sympathies to all family and friends. Here we are in front of Gus Theodoro's  later restaurant on Bleecker Street. John and I used to go to Gus's previous spot on Waverly Place for lunch,  after a "vigorous" gym workout, and talk about life, movies, and our future wives, his Patty and my Patty. May her memory be a blessing.

Patty always noticed people ‘s strengths and talents. She was the kind of person who built up others, rarely drawing attention to herself. She was kind and gentle but at the same time, wickedly funny. Any little gathering for fun would elicit her to pronounce: “It’s a party.” I will always treasure our trip together to Scotland! I always felt loved and totally accepted by Patty. We will miss you dear Patty but are grateful you are now at peace!! Love you dear Patty from your sister Meg.
