Maya came into this world on May 29, 2002 in a natural water birth at home in Morristown, New Jersey. As a child, Maya was exceptionally talented with everything she tried: She was not yet two years old when she taught herself how to read by watching her sister learn how to read, and as she grew up, so did her talents. She truly seemed to learn by osmosis. As a young child, she was homeschooled by her mother and together they had many adventures learning and exploring.
Starting in middle school, she attended schools in Manhattan where she could engage her mind to the fullest. She graduated from Quad Preparatory School in 2020, and after the pandemic, she continued to Carleton College, where she excelled academically having achieved Dean’s List for both years she attended.
Maya was truly a renaissance woman. Not only was she a brilliant scholar and intellectually gifted, but she was also talented in so many other ways. She cared about social justice and the state of the world. She was an amazing photographer and fine artist, a wonderful writer, and a musician who played the electric guitar. She loved gaming and competed in Super Smash Bros and Magic the Gathering tournaments. She had wonderful programming skills, recently modifying and creating art for computer games. She was a Beatles enthusiast but also knew music from every decade and every genre. She loved the series Dr. Who and could recite whole episodes by heart. She was extremely witty and funny, and could do great impressions and accents. She enjoyed traveling the world and relished time spent in nature.
But most of all, it was her generous heart and spirit that made her shine. She was a truly loving daughter and sister, and a loyal friend. She had a beautiful relationship with her sister, whom Maya admired and loved dearly.
She will be deeply missed by parents, her loving sister, her stepbrothers, her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family. She held great promise and we are all devastated by her tragic loss.
We love you so much, Maya. May your bright light ever shine in the heavens above.
