M. Saleem Khatri passed away peacefully in New York City on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. Saleem, as he was known to family and friends, was a devoted father, talented architect, and loving husband. Saleem is survived by his wife Sarah (Manhattan, New York), his brother Anwar (Palm Coast, Florida), his son Andrew (Rumson, New Jersey), his daughter-in-law Sheila and their two adoring children, Smith (7) and Avery (5).
An architect by trade, Saleem worked until his final days, most recently with the NYC Department of Buildings. Saleem grew up in Karachi, Pakistan studying in the shadows of the Himalaya Mountains at Saint Joseph’s School, North Point in Darjeeling, India. From an early age, Saleem loved exploring the trails and mountains surrounding Saint Joseph’s. Following his boarding school days, Saleem went on to study at Texas A&M University where he earned his undergraduate degree in architecture.
Afterwards, Saleem moved to New York City where he met his wife Sarah. They married in New York in September 1976 and have resided in Manhattan ever since. Together with their son Andrew, they spent weekends in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey exploring the coastline and delighting in the beach. Saleem spent his final years in awe of his two growing grandchildren and continuing his beloved architecture practice.
The family will host calling hours on Sunday, May 21 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, New York, NY. A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 22 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph’s Church, 404 East 87th Street, New York, NY.
