HORWITZ-Esther, 100 1/2, Esther died at her home in Manhattan, the island where she lived her whole life. Born Esther Botwin, she met her husband, Myron (Mike), and they agreed to marry before the end of their first date. They were wed on Valentine’s Day 1946, the day Mike returned from New Guinea, and spent the next 67 years together.
Their life was full of family and travel; Esther is survived by her children, Leslie Rahl (Andy), Richard Horwitz (Marianne Wolk), grandchildren, Kaitlin Brandt (Nick), Stephen Rahl (Jo), Jesse Horwitz (Mark Severs), Kevin Rahl (Lindsey) and Gillian Piltch (Matt) and great-grandchildren, Jamie, Lila, Finn, Mason and Ava. When not with friends or family in NYC, their trips around the world also brought them to family in Boston, Denver, Mexico, and Israel, among many other destinations.
Esther graduated from NYU as a music major and later earned a Master’s in Education of the Deaf at Teachers College, Columbia University. She sang with MasterVoices in Carnegie Hall, in Verbier, and at other venues into her early 90s; her friends at the MasterVoices surprised her with a rousing recorded rendition of "Happy Birthday" for her 100th. In memoriam contributions to MasterVoices would be a beautiful way to honor her.
Following a private service on August 2nd,, the family will receive friends from 1:30pm-5:00pm at the home of her son Richard Horwitz (45 Gramercy Park North, 4A, NYC). A separate Celebration of Life zoom will occur on September 10th at 11:00am ET Meeting ID: 856 2484 6743, Passcode: Esther
