Elizabeth Ahern Buckman, age 47, died peacefully at home in Manhattan on January 2, 2021. Born on August 11, 1973 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, to James and Nancy (nee: McLaughlin) Buckman, she was the eldest of three daughters.
Elizabeth was raised in Atlanta and graduated from The Lovett School in 1991. She then attended and graduated from Georgetown University in 1995 and received a Master’s Degree in Education from Boston College’s Lynch School of Education in 1999. She took pride in the education she had received and hoped for others to have access to high quality academic institutions.
Among the topics that fascinated her most was medicine; she pursued and obtained Paramedic Certification and often lamented that she hadn’t committed to a pre-medical path. She demonstrated an ability to connect with people in crisis and could be a calming presence in an urgent situation. Elizabeth loved and enjoyed the company of animals, particularly her two Persian cats who were her beloved pets for years. She, herself, was a creature of comfort and habit, preferring to do things on her own schedule and did not especially care for formality for formality’s sake. Elizabeth was happiest among her extended family which included five nieces and nephews and many cousins. Any mention of her would be incomplete without reference to Nantucket Island, which was her favorite place in the world.
Elizabeth is survived by her loving parents, James and Nancy Buckman, her two younger sisters, Anne Calder and husband, Andrew Calder, as well as their three children, Louise, William, and Caroline Calder and Julia Kenney and her husband, Owen Kenney, as well as their two children, George and Rose Kenney. The family will hold Elizabeth’s memory dear to their hearts forever, as will a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 980 Park Avenue in New York City at 10 a.m. on January 14, 2021. Burial will be on Nantucket Island. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Elizabeth’s honor to the Elizabeth A. Buckman C’95 Memorial Scholarship at Georgetown University, Gift Processing, Department 0734, Washington, D.C. 20073-0734.
