I have just heard the sad news about charlie. Thats what my family called him 55 yrs ago when he worked in the basement of our apartment building in riverdale new york. He was so patient with me   i was 4 yrs old when he started to be my dentist and i screamed like bloody murder he was great with me.My folks were very friendly with him and his wife and 3 little girls.   Rest in Peace sweet charlie.

 I will remember Charles as very compassionate, sincere and and caring individual who had a tremendous impact on my life and career as well as my fmily

I am very honored to have known Charles for over 30 years. I feel like a member
 
of my family has passed as well as a good friend who has helped guide me personally and professionally. There are a lot of experiences I've had with Charles over the years, many of which I won't have time to say. I'll keep some of those memories close to my heart. I want to say to Roya and Charles family how much I know he cared and loved them and I know he will miss you all. I remember so many conversations we had about family, friends and work. 
Charles loved dentistry and made tremendous contributions to the profession with his passion for implants and making patients lives better.
Charles legacy will be carved into the dental profession forever and I am very proud to have known him both personally and professionally.

 Dr.  Weiss, was a pioneer.  He helped change the practice of dentistry and his impact will live on for a very long time. Charles lived his life fully and accomplished much, he didn't sit still much of the time, always thinking, writing and doing new things. He was very progressive and set a great example of hard work and doing meaningful things.  
Charles lived life large, he had a great presence, and his accomplishments were significant. Every time I see a picture or drive by the Chrysler Building I think of the man practicing in the most exclusive building in the world, and being on the top floor. Looking out the windows of his office you new you were at a special place. 
Like the Chrysler Corporation, Charles was an international player. That was the field in which he played. He traveled the world as an educator, researcher, inventor, and author and loved it. His patients came from all over the world. They came for his skill, compassion, sincerity and care.  He touched the lives of many of us in the profession of dentistry as well as those he knew as just a friend. 
When someone like Charles sees a problem, they seek solutions. They become engrossed in the challenge of making things right as they see it. They develop a passion and have a laser like focus for there cause or mission. These individuals have a drive to win and succeed. Many times their goals become their obsession. It is these kinds of people who make significant changes people's lives and the world we live in. It is a great personal characteristic to have this type of personality but it comes with a consequence. I believe Charles was one of those people.  We owe a debt of gratitude to his perseverance in having the FDA recognize blade implants in the practice of dentistry among many other things. 
One of the things that I learned about Charles was that he had tremendous loyalty and would give anything he could to a friend or colleague. He would be generous with his knowledge, time, friendship and money. He didn't ask for anything in return, EXCEPT there was on thing that he did expect. And that was an equal amount of loyalty.  When friends, acquaintances, or professional colleagues differed with his goals or opinions a conflict might occur. You see, Charles was a man of high principle and when he made his mind up on a subject, idea or an aspiration he believed in, he dug his heal in to see it through. If you disagreed you were in for a fight. Just like a fighter in the ring trying to get a knockout to win. 
I believe it is this trait that many great and successful people have, that is needed, to make significant changes in their and other peoples lives. 
As I said before I was fortunate to know Charles professionally and personally. He was a mentor to me and many others. He helped shape my professional career, had great wisdom and excellent advice from one who was self made.  Charles was a pioneer and a renaissance man who had friends around the world.  There are many memories that I think about when remembering Charles. I may get this one a little wrong in context, but it has had a lasting meaning to me, it was about working and when to stop. Some people feel at a certain point you should stop and retire. Charles said, why would I stop doing what I love? If life is to be happy why not live it doing what you love. He definitely lived those comments practicing well into his 80's.
 I had a patient once who was from NYC and it was easier to see her in the there. When I had asked Charles if I could see the patient in his office, the answer was, absolutely. It was an implant patient and I was still pretty young in my career. When the patient came to his office for me to treat her, Charles (at this point I should say Dr. Weiss) helped guide my treatment. He also supplied the implants, did the temporaries and ended up doing the final restoration. The end result was much better than I could have done. It certainly was a huge plus for the patient. My dilemma now was the patient had paid me and I did very little of the work. When I asked Charles what I owed him for the implants, his time, the office and my education the answer came quickly and without hesitation. Let's go to lunch and you can pay. By the way my father recently passed away and Charles and Roya came to the funeral to be with me on that very difficult day. I remember thinking that my father had an Oratronics blade for over 25 years. That was the last time I saw Charlie also. 
One summer weekend Charles had been to my home on Martha's Vineyard. We were just relaxing and having a conversation with my kids in the living room. My youngest Tyler, who is here today, was starting to get involved in investing and spoke with great enthusiasm. Some people might have dismissed this fourteen-year-old kids interest, but Charles did something that I thought was unbelievable. He reached into his pocket and handed Tyler $1000.  Take this; we can be partners, if you loose the money, no problem, if you make a profit will split it. What Charles did was empower and challenge him. That's so consistent with a person who tries to inspire and encourage others. That certainly made a significant impact on Tyler life and future and it also taught me a lesson on influencing others. 
One December we took a Caribbean vacation with Charles and Roya. They had chartered a catamaran and we cruised the Islands, swam and just relaxed. Roya loved to swim and spent most of the time in the water while Charles spent a lot of time floating next to the boat.  That New Years Eve we cruised into Yost Van Dyke, a small island of about 175 inhabitants that swells to thousand on New Years Eve. We had a great time at Foxy's Bar. 
We've traveled to India, Dubai, Japan and numerous places here in the US. Some of the trips were just vacations, others were also attached to lecturing. He always made and impression on those he taught and it was an honor accompanying him. 
I am going to miss Charles and very much appreciate having the opportunity to know him and be his friend. 
When I heard about Dr. Weiss's passing I spoke with the AAID. This was an organization, which he loved. It was a passion for him like so many things were. Over the past few years there had been some tension with the ABOI/ID and subsequently with the AAID. Many unfortunate events followed and the organization and relationship he so cared for and helped grow was terminated.
I asked if I could speak on behalf of the AAID. They had already known of his passing and had drafted a remembrance for him to be published in the next Journal. I would like to read the remarks.

Dr. Charles Weiss, of New York City, passed away on December 30, 2012 at the age of 86. A 1952 graduate of New York University School of Dentistry, he earned his credential as an Associate Fellow of the Academy in 1970.  He became a Fellow in 1985 and was named an Honored Fellow by his peers in 1989.  The American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry awarded him Diplomate status in 1991.  

Dr. Weiss had a keen and visionary interest in the global efforts of the AAID, serving as the chair of the Global Committee for the first four years of the committee's existence.  He was named the Director of the first MaxiCourse® sponsored by the Academy outside the United States.  The India MaxiCourse®, now known as the Asia MaxiCourse®, began in 2003. He was named the recipient of the AAID Foundation's Isaih Lew Memorial Research Award in 1997.

Charles Weiss is remembered by hundreds of members of the AAID, from throughout the world, as someone who was willing to be their mentor.  He welcomed visiting dentists – from as close as across the street to from around the world – to his office at the top of the Chrysler Building.  

Dr. Weiss literally occupied famous space.  His office was located at the top of the world-famous Chrysler Building.  And in fact, his dental office occupied what was once the personal gymnasium of Walter P. Chrysler himself.  The space – and Dr. Weiss – were prominently featured in a New York Times article, “On Top of the World, Drafting, Dreaming, and Drilling,” published on May 26, 2005.

We will all miss Dr. Weiss's presence, insightfulness, humor and perseverance in all he has done for the AAID and Dentistry. 

Lastly again I would just like to say, I'll miss you Charlie.

It is an honor for me to be able to say a few words in tribute to Dr. Weiss.
My husband and I first met Dr. Weiss in the spring of 2010. I had been thinking of starting my own dental practice and had learnt that he was offering space to rent in the Chrysler building. I left that day even more confident about the prospect of a new beginning.
I remember being struck by his energy, passion and wisdom. His blue eyes sparkled with the zest for life and he always had a warm and friendly smile. He was big-hearted and generously shared stories and lessons from the years of his life and work. 
He considered the practice on the 69th floor to be an extended family and the personal interest he took in our welfare was amazing and outstanding. 
I feel fortunate that I was lucky to know Dr. Weiss albeit for a shorter time than I would have liked. He will always be a very special part of my memory and will be deeply missed. As the Persians say ‘zindagi migazara' – life goes on – but you will always be in our hearts.
Our heartfelt sympathy and best wishes to Roya and his entire family. God bless.

Charles was a very honorable, upstanding, generous, humorous man who was crazy about his wife Roya, dentistry, travel,and New York City (among many other things).  I remember standing with him on Fifth Avenue, waiting for Roya to come out of one of the stores, waving his hand up and down the avenue asking me where in the world I could see anything so magnificent and exciting.  I will always remember his hospitality when I stayed with them and the lovely Lalique wine glass he presented to me as a gift.  He was a mensch and will be missed by all.

A sparkling personality who influenced the lives of all those who were lucky enough to know him and to love him. Charles will be missed for his leadership, his passion and his sense of humour as well as his academic and pioneering and enduring acheivements in dentistry.

Charles will in our hearts and minds forever.

The world has lost someone very special. Our deepest sympathy and good wishes.

This is very sad news indeed. It is hard to imagine that the energetic and hyperactive Charles will no longer be around to add his special flavor to life.

To me Charles was a mentor. I often mention his name when I talk about the people who most influenced my career in dentistry in a tremendous extent. Not only did I learn implantology from him, but I learned an entire "system", a process and approach which helped me in sharpening my skills, my senses and my reasoning.

Charles' persistence to convey knowledge and know-how is remarkable, so is his insistence in connecting to the global south: Egypt, India, Jordan, among many other places that he reached out for. His mark is indelible. 

The loss of Charles M. Weiss is my own personal loss, I mourn him with you, and with all those who loved him and appreciated his great achievements.

Extraordinary man, full of life despite his age; caring, loving and friendly towards others. Dr. Weiss was a wonderful person, I have the pleasure to meet him and work for him, it wasn't long but it was a total joy, he cared about everyone that surrounded him and was patience and tolerant with me even when I was not deserving. I loved talking to him because everytime I did I learned something new. I am grateful for being next to him for the time I did and most of all for being able to get know him for what he always was, a wonderful, wonderful man.
