Bernie was born on January 31. 1931 to Rebecca and Morris Boroson in Schenectady, NY. He attended Nott Terrace H.S. and upon graduating in 1949, earned a basketball scholarship to George Washington University in Washington, DC. He left college after two years and eventually started a career working first as an assistant film librarian, and then as assistant stage manager at WTOP, a CBS affiliate station in Washington, DC. He was the original stage manager of the television news show Face The Nation.
Bernie produced the television presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson and John F. Kennedy as well as various gubernatorial campaigns.
He was then chosen as the field producer for the CBS space program coverage and captured the events surrounding the first suborbital flight, reporting to Walter Cronkite.
He went on to cover all the remaining space flights up through and including the moon landings of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12.
Bernie served as pool producer for all three major networks at the time, covering flights and recoveries from aircraft carriers and at the Houston Space Center. Bernie was covering Gemini 8 when Neil Armstrong became endangered in his capsule, tumbling through space, and made an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean.
The next step in his career brought him to Visual Information Systems (VIS), network for continuing physician education, where he produced and directed continuing educational medical videos.
And since there was never a problem to which he didn’t try to find a solution, Bernie invented Endraft, at first to prevent cold air from coming into his home through window air conditioners and is still sold to this day.
On a final note, when Bernie left college, he’d hoped to begin a career as a singer but got caught up in producing TV coverage of the extraordinary events that occurred mid-twentieth century. Nevertheless, at the age of 80, he found a way to fulfill his lifelong dream and joined a workshop that ultimately helped fulfill his wish. During his ninth decade, as his final act, he became a beloved performer in Manhattan cabaret venues: Don’t Tell Mama; Under 54; and Birdland. Bravo!
In 1977 Bernie met his future wife, Judith Stuart, playing tennis in East Hampton, NY. Later that year they married, and he found a family with Judy and her son Eric. In due time, the family grew to include granddaughters Emilia Stuart Lynch (Skyler Lynch) and Natalia Stuart, and Eric’s wife Lindsey Willson-Stuart.
Along with his wife, stepson, and granddaughters, Bernie is survived by his devoted niece Barbara Boroson (Joseph Rutt), and his loving nephews, Marty Boroson (Andrew Dodd), Ken Boroson (Linda Goodman), Michael Boroson (Amy Andrews), David Boroson, Ron Ohayv, and Adam Stofsky (Anna Hodson); along with great nieces and nephews Jude , Rowan, Leana, Sam, Daniel (Jess), Allie (Miguel), Ethan, Zach (Ali), and their children; sister-in-law Lianne Stofsky; and many lifelong friends.
Bernie was happiest around other people. He was vivacious and sociable, lighting up every room and ensuring that everyone felt seen and welcome. His constant singing and humming, punny wit, joyous laugh, political passions, and unmistakable love will be dearly missed by his beloved family and friends.
