Velma was born in Tylertown, MS on July 6, 1927 and moved to New Orleans in 1945.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Delia Brown; her loving husband of 61 years, Jesse B. Holmes; two sisters, Edith Skinner and Delma Freeman; and eight brothers, William, Herbert, Aubry, Albert, Melvin, Millard, Jesse, and Jimmy Brown.
Velma is survived by her two beloved children, Sandra H. LeBlanc and Rodger B. Holmes, Sr (wife: Mary C. Holmes); two grandchildren, Cassandra A. “Candy” LeBlanc and Rodger B. Holmes, Jr; her sister, Ruby Howell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Velma enjoyed playing Pokeno and Bingo with her friends at Metairie Manor. She also enjoyed going to the casino and taking road trips with her daughter and granddaughter. Most of all she loved life, her family and her animals. She will be dearly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 2:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 11:00AM. The interment will take place at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum on Monday, August 29 at 10:00AM.
