Dr. Thomas Davis Giles, a longtime resident of Metairie and only child of John Thomas Giles and Aliece Davis Giles, was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Greenwood, MS. He passed away peacefully April 17, 2018 in Metairie. He was 80.
A 1962 graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Giles served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps 1966-1968. As cardiovascular physician and researcher, Dr. Giles practiced and advanced the field of medicine for over 50 years. He served as Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, Chief of Medical Services of the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, Director for Cardiovascular Research at LSU Health Sciences Center, Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, and past President of American Society of Hypertension. Dr. Giles was respected greatly for his intellect and commitment for excellence in everything he was associated with. Throughout his career, Dr. Giles was recognized as a world renowned physician and teacher with deep dedication to patient care. He served countless patients and also mentored and inspired colleagues and medical students to always go beyond their potential. He was a blessing to many through his acts of kindness and generosity in the community and his church. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend. He will be missed dearly by his family and his community.
Dr. Giles is survived by his loving wife, Louise (“Lou”); daughters, Helene, Denise (late Michael Giles), Lizette (Atilio Zardetto), Tina and Caroline (Logan Blanco); grandchildren Aidan & Ellie Zardetto; Sofia & Alex Blanco and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A special thanks to his caregivers Albert, Demetrice, Will and Cortney. Visitation, at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on April 26, 2018 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans. Visitation, at 10:00 a.m., April 27, 2018, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Metairie, will be followed by Mass at noon, then burial at All Saints Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Orleans chapter of the American Heart Association, 110 Veterans Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124.
