Steven Waymon Young

Steven Waymon Young went home to his eternal resting place on Monday, July 2, 2018 at the age of 48 from a brain abscess. Born in Birmingham, AL to loving parents, he is survived by his mother, Diane Schaefer (Paul), father, George R. Young (Marilyn), and fiancé, Holley Haag; sister, Deborah Young (Elizabeth); brother, G. Richard Young (Nicole); nieces and nephews, Christopher, Cortland, Taya, Ean, Ellis, and George Young; numerous beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his faithful and loyal companion, Colby, his Jack Russell Terrier.

Steven is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Inez "Gammy" and Merlin Bernadas; paternal grandparents, Ellis and Louise Young; great-aunt, Tay Bright; and maternal great-grandmother, Bessie "Granny B" Branch.

Steven began his career with his father, George, working at Young Rental. He was a self-proclaimed "serial entrepreneur," having created several successful companies over the course of the past 25 years. Several of them are still the leaders in their respective markets, Crescent City Tent, which evolved into Event Rental, and Event Restroom. His most recent venture was Plaquemines Processing and Recovery, an Industrial waste water plant in Belle Chasse. Over the course of his career, Steven provided vital services for Superbowl events, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and other major events such as The Zurich Classic and Voodoo Music and Arts Festival, as well as over 100 feature films, 10 different hurricanes, and the BP oil spill.

While attending school at St. Clement of Rome, Steven served as an altar boy. He went on to attend Brother Martin High School, and graduated from All Saint's Episcopal School in Vicksburg, MS. Steven attended The University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" before earning his B.S. Business Administration at Holy Cross College. After the sale of his first company, Event Rental, Steven earned a joint Masters in Business and Entrepreneurship at UNCA and Western Carolina University in Asheville. This was the first class to graduate with a Masters in Entrepreneurship at Western Carolina University.

A true New Orleanian, he reigned as King of Grela in 1998, and was a member of other Mardi Gras Krewes, including Endymion, throughout his adult life. Steven was incredibly generous, though all of his charitable acts were done with humility in anonymity. He worked with the Gretna Police Department, as well as disaster relief services around the city. In gratitude for his service with community and the city of Gretna, Steven was honored with an award from the city in 1999. In recognition of his service during the difficult and uncertain days following Hurricane Katrina, Steven was awarded the City of Gretna Police Department and Executive Protection Institute Certificate of Meritorious Service on December 12, 2006. He was an animal lover, and served on the Board of Directors for the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary, and assisted with many events for the SPCA.

As a young adult, he nurtured a love for travel that began in childhood. Every summer, and often over holidays, Steven and his mother traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, England, and Amsterdam, often accompanied by his brother and sister. When not busy with work, he also loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with friends. Steven considered his friendships to be lifelong commitments.

During the past year, Steven reconnected with his faith, turning his life over to the Lord for direction and guidance. Steven has left a void that can never be filled, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His pain and suffering are over. His family and friends can only find comfort in knowing Steven is with God, wrapped in His loving arms, and joined with his Gammy, Granny B, and Aunt Tay.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial mass on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 12:00 pm at Visitation of Our Lady Church, 3500 Ames Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until mass begins. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, masses offered in Steven's name, as well as donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Bridge House are preferred.
