Samuel Fry Chase II, 91, born on June 3, 1925 departed June 3, 2016 of natural causes. He was the son of Samuel and Maud Muller Chase, husband of the late Mary Ruth Mellor, father of sons Samuel Fry (Katherine) Chase III and the late William Stevens (Beverly) Chase, grandchildren; William Stevens Chase II, Edward Pink (Laura) Chase and Eva Maud Chase.
A native of New Orleans, born on Jackson Barracks along with his sister, Nancy Chase Holbrook (Mrs. A. Winter Holbrook) at the onset of WWII, moved to Charlottesville, Virginia and attended Lane High School, Tulane and the University of Virginia, Mechanical Engineering.
During the Korean War he was an instructor at the Combat Engineer Center, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Upon return to New Orleans, he joined the Planning Division of the New Orleans District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired after 31 years.
A pilot since 1944, and a certificated FAA aircraft mechanic, he flew missions and was Lieutenant Colonel and was the Director of Search and Rescue for the Louisiana Wing of the Civil Air Patrol for 37 years. After his retirement, he maintained and flew his beloved Navion N4191K “Dragon Lady” out of Covington Vincent Airport.
His kind and gentle spirit will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
