Peggy Germany

Marguerite “Peggy” Angela Germany (née Macmillan) of Metairie, LA, died on August 18, 2021 at the age of 89. She was predeceased by: her parents, Sir James Wilson Macmillan and Lady Beatrice Louise Macmillan of Belize City, Belize; her elder son, John Wilson Lloyd of Harvey, LA; her second husband, William E. Germany, Sr. of Metairie, LA; and her older sisters, Pamela Mary Hastings of Kent, England and Patricia Louise Preis of Metairie, LA. She is survived by: her daughter, Diane Lloyd Matthews (Charles) of River Ridge, LA; her younger son, Stephen Francis Lloyd (Giselle) of Houston, TX; her stepson, William E. Germany, Jr. (Trina) of Robert, LA; her step-daughter, Lezli Germany Alford (Bennett) of Charlottesville, VA; her seven grandchildren, Fern A. Lloyd (Anthony), Andrew C. Matthews, M.D. (Jennifer), James L. Matthews (Katherine), Danielle Lloyd Lobell (Tom), Christine A. Matthews, M.D., John S. Lloyd, and Christopher J. Lloyd; her step-grandchildren, Rhian Germany, Everett Germany, Christopher Germany, and Kelly Powers; and her beloved four great-grandsons, Brock, Blake, and Derek Warner and Rhys Matthews, the loves of her life in her final years.

Peggy was born in Belize City on October 29, 1931, the youngest of three daughters. She met her first husband, John Philip Lloyd, in Belize City when they were both 19 and he was a young British Officer in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. They were married in Oxford, England in 1954 and had three children. Divorced in her late twenties, Peggy returned to Belize to raise her children. In 1967, at the age of 35, she bravely decided to immigrate to the United States to provide her children with better educational opportunities. She began working for Chevron Oil Company not long after her arrival, and Chevron was so impressed with her work ethic and intelligence that it paid her tuition to study accounting at Loyola University in New Orleans. In 1984, after raising her children to adulthood, she met and married Bill Germany. They enjoyed 36 years of marriage that lasted up until Bill’s death last year.

In June of 1990, Peggy lost her first son, John, when he was hit and killed by a lightning strike on the campus of UNO while on his way to an accounting class. John had a daughter, Fern, whom Peggy and Bill raised from the age of eleven. As she said, the best way to honor her son was to raise his only child.

Peggy was an avid tennis player in her younger years and won the 1961 women’s championship in Belize. After retiring from Chevron in 1987, she volunteered at the Ochsner main campus for many years, first in surgery and then in the gift shop.

The family wishes to thank and acknowledge Lourdes Barahona Milla, who has devoted the last two years to caring for both Bill and then Peggy. The family is also grateful for the care given by St. Francis Villa Assisted Living, where both Bill and Peggy lived during the last year.

Family and friends are invited to a funeral service on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124. Visitation will begin at 12:00pm. Interment will be private.
