Nellie Arnoult Schott, age 96, a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2022, at her home. Nellie was born December 11, 1925, to Helen Hesse Arnoult and Charles S. F. Arnoult. Her father died in 1927 of injuries sustained in WWI. Nellie’s mother married George Whatley in 1938, who became a stepfather to Nellie.
Nellie was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School. At Sacred Heart, Nellie was a member of the band and the only freshman on the varsity basketball team, which won 4 consecutive city championships. Nellie graduated from Loyola University with a degree in Economics. While attending Loyola, she was chosen Campus Queen. It was also during her time at Loyola that she met her future husband, George Schott.
Nellie later earned her education certificate and became a respected and admired teacher at St. Dominic School, where she taught for more than 30 years. Not only was she an excellent English teacher, she was also an excellent role model for her many students.
Nellie was a proud member and former president of the Chalmette Chapter, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, and a member of the Marians in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. While Nellie enjoyed spending time with her friends, nothing made her happier than a house filled with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic, prayerful, faith-filled, gracious, loving, and a wonderful story teller. One of Nellie’s proudest achievements was her memoir, “Just Give Me A Little Time.”
Nellie was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, George J. Schott, Jr., her mother, Helen Arnoult Whatley, her father Charles S. F. Arnoult, her adoptive father, George Whatley, her brother, Charles E. F. Arnoult, and her beloved first grandchild, Brian C. Donelon. She is survived by her seven children: Kenneth Schott, D.D.S.
