Mitchell Mario Berry, our beloved, brilliant, and beautiful son, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2022, in River Ridge, Louisiana. He had just turned 23 years old. A May 2022 graduate of Southern Methodist University and a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Mitchell earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the Cox School of Business with a minor in History from the Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. He had accepted a position as an Analyst in the Risk & Financial Advisory group of Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP in Dallas, TX. Mitchell was a National Merit Finalist and Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar, Provost Scholar, CFP Foundation BBA Scholar, Hilltop Scholar, Mustang Scholar, Mary Jane Johnson Endowed Scholarship recipient, and Hispanic Scholarship Fund recipient. Also, while attending SMU, he was a teacher’s assistant for graduate (M.B.A.) level Finance courses and worked with OverlayAnalytics, JPMorgan Chase, and in the service industry, most recently at Barley House. His entrepreneurial spirit started long before college as he started a t-shirt business during his time in high school. Mitchell graduated from Jesuit High School in 2018, where he played football and baseball, was a Scholar Athlete, an editor of the Calliope Literary Magazine, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Sodality of our Lady. He enjoyed investing in the financial markets, attending live music events and festivals — even sneaking backstage on occasion — and comic conventions, cheering on the New Orleans Saints, binge watching Netflix shows, playing with his dog Apollo, and championing his brother and favorite person in the world, Will, in all endeavors. But most importantly, he was a loyal, fierce, and true friend.
In the collective words of his Sigma Nu brothers: Mitchell never failed to bring a smile to your face. A gifted storyteller, Mitchell was truly a selfless person who loved to see others succeed. His persistent dedication to loving and nurturing those around him was beyond comparison and was evident through the many interactions he had with friends, loved ones, and new acquaintances. Mitchell took his congenial personality into every aspect of life, with the desire to better the lives of those around him and truly invest himself in them. It is with these gifts that Mitchell was able to create lasting memories and positive effects on so many lives around him.
Mitchell’s drive to help others is probably best exhibited by his initiating and spearheading the development of his chapter’s internal support team, which provides a safe space to his brothers to turn to when they are in need.
Mitchell is survived by his parents C. Byron and Ana Sosa Berry, Jr.; his brother William Henry; his grandparents Jose and Rita Basulto and Jacqueline Rotge’ Berry; his uncles and aunts Jose and Frances, Felipe and Nestor, and Alberto and Nelsa Basulto, Monica Sosa, Daneen Zeringue, and Paul Berry; and his cousins Andre, Roberto, Cristina, Samuel, and Jacob Basulto, Rogelio and Luca Cordovez, and Gary, George, and Gabriel Zeringue. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers Cecil Byron Berry, Sr., and Mario Sosa.
