Maurice Herbert Olivier, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the age of 75. Born in New Orleans on May 14, 1939, to the late Maurice Olivier, Sr. and Carmen Lubrano Olivier, Maurice graduated from St. Aloysius and attended Loyola University. He was the embodiment of all the things that made New Orleans such a vibrant and unique place. An active member of his community, he directed school plays and participated in local dances. Most importantly, he is remembered for his contributions to the legacy of Mardi Gras. While an affiliate of many carnival organizations in the city, we remember him best as Captain of the Krewe of Centurions.
Maurice brought joy wherever he went; his laugh was infectious and full of mirth. At the same time he was humble, rarely alluding to his many wonderful qualities, yet constantly praising those of others, especially his brother Wayne Olivier, whom he extolled as “very smart, someone who could learn anything there is to know about a thing” and his sister Jacqueline Olivier Davis, whom he praised as “very talented.” But it was easy to see where all the personality resided. Maurice forged lasting relationships with an easy-going style that was all his own. Whether as a jeweler, a valued employee at Castellon Pharmacy, or a
loving father and grandfather, it is impossible to deny his impact on those he surrounded. Simply, he was a friend to all. Loving husband of the late Jane Stieffel Olivier, admiring brother of the late Jacqueline Olivier Davis and Wayne Stieffel Olivier. Maurice is survived by
his loving son Wayne Michael Olivier and daughter-in-law LaCresia Jobe Olivier and adoring daughter Angela Olivier Castellon. He was a devoted grandfather to Aimee and Steve Maestri, Cathy and Chris Moore, Victoria Castellon, Maria and John Franck, Teresa Castellon, Dylan Olivier, Madeline Castellon, Michaela Olivier, and Dane Olivier, and doting great-grandfather to Isabella and Dominick Maestri, Connor and Henry Moore, and the most recent addition to the family, Maurice Charles Franck.
