Marie Catherine Nunmaker Derenbecker passed away peacefully on July 15, 2024. She was born on April 3, 1930 to Mary Magdalene Haverkamp Reggio and Godfrey Octave Reggio in New Orleans, Louisiana. A graduate of Ursuline Academy and a life-long resident of the New Orleans area. Marie Catherine was a devout Catholic and at the time of her passing was a member of Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church in Metairie. She spent many years as a teacher at Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic School. She was very active in parish life as a CCD teacher, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Lector and many other tasked that needed to be done for her beloved Catholic Church. In recognition of her devotion to the Catholic Church she received the medal of the Order of St. Louis in a beautiful ceremony at St. Louis Cathedral.
She was a very humble person that did her best to share the love of Christ to all she met. She would always tell her family to “Do everything in moderation.” She followed her own advice except when it came to her Catholic faith. Marie lived the Gospels and was a bright light in this world.
Marie out lived two husbands, Andrew Nunmaker and Warren Derenbecker. She is survived by four children. Andrew Nunmaker III (wife Aline). Lynn Mathews (husband Ron). Alice Dennis (husband Mark). Randall Nunmaker (wife Missy). She is also survived by nine grandchildren. Nicole Perry, Heidi Drott, Brad Mathews, Kristen Condon, Kevin Mathews, Sue Stephan, Arielle Sandel, Kylie Gilbert and Amanda Mason. She also had 20 great grandchildren that affectionately called her GiGi.
She will be remembered by her family as a simple and humble woman. She was not consumed with building earthly possessions. Her treasure was in bring delight and happiness to her family and friends. She typically would put other’s needs ahead of her own and she did this always with a smile. Her life of simplicity served her well.
Funeral services will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA 70124 on Friday, July 19, 2024. The family will welcome friends at 10:00 followed by a Catholic Mass at 12:00pm. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery in the family tomb in the adjacent cemetery.
The family requests that any memorial donations be made in her honor to Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church 8617 W. Metairie Ave. Metairie, La 70003.
