Joy Mary Broas Monroe died peacefully on April 10, 2021 at the age of 85 and returned to her Lord and Savior to begin a wonderful eternity with Him. She was born on September 22, 1935 in New Orleans to her parents, the late George A. and Adele C. Emke Broas. She had one sister, the late Adele G. Broas (L.J.) Brown. Joy attended Dominican High School and Newcomb College where she met the love of her life, the late Joseph P. (Pat) Monroe. They were married 58 years. The good Lord blessed them with four wonderful children, Shawn Patrick (Dianne) Monroe, Laura Elizabeth Monroe, Blair Joseph Monroe and George Clayton Monroe. Her family was her whole world. She was active with being a substitute teacher, room mother, cafeteria helper, helping with school fairs, driving kids to field trips, and always cheering them on at their ball games and much more. Her home was always open to all their friends. Joy was a kind, compassionate and loving person to everyone who entered her life. She devoted her life to helping others and never wanted anything in return. Joy received a Medical Assistant degree at St. Tammany Hospital. She volunteered as a tutor for 3rd graders in a reading program. Her interest in genealogy led her to compiling family histories for her own family and others. As historian for the Louisiana Division of the UDC, she had access to all membership applications. From these she compiled a 500 page membership index. For this she was awarded the Jefferson Davis Medal and the Winnie Davis Medal by the UDC National Organization. She also was presented a certificate of merit for services to Jefferson Parish by President Michael J. Yenni. She has enjoyed memberships in Raphael Semmes Chapter UDC, New Orleans Chapter DAR, National Society Southern Dames of America, and Daughters of the American Colonists, Thomas Noble Chapter. She is survived by her four children, three grandchildren Kimberly Ann Monroe, Stacy Lynn (Patrick) O'Shaughnessy and John Joseph Monroe-Perryman, six great-grandchildren Kaleb, Kaden, Allyson and Chase Monroe and Patrick and Palmer O'Shaughnessy and numerous nieces and nephews. Each one had a special place in her heart. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful and compassionate care and friendship provided by Sarah Foxworth, Carolyn Weber and Tywanna Baker. They shared much laughter and memorable times. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd (in Metairie Cemetery), on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at 11am. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9am to 11am. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made in Joy Monroe's name to Volunteers of America of Southeast Louisiana.
