Dr. Joseph Francis Guenther, M.D., born on October 5, 1933 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Kathleen Roche Guenther and the late Adolph Eugene Guenther, Sr, passed away at age 85 on November 9, 2018 in Birmingham, AL following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Adolph Eugene Guenther, Jr, Leo Anthony Guenther, and Dr John James Guenther; and his sister, Mary Catherine Guenther Boyer. Joseph is survived by his wife of 42 years, Erva Griffin Guenther; his daughter, Johanna Guenther Sims (Scott); stepdaughter, Katherine Terry Aguilar; and grandchildren, Charles Scott Sims and Griffin Lawrence Aguilar. Joseph is a 1951 graduate of Jesuit High School. He attended Loyola University, New Orleans, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1954 and a Master of Science degree in Chemistry in 1955. He graduated from Louisiana State University, School of Medicine, in 1959. Joseph practiced medicine in the New Orleans area for 40 years. He was a member of the United States Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1982. He was a longtime resident of Metairie, Louisiana, and parishioner of St Catherine of Siena, where he attended elementary school and was an altar server. For the past ten years, he attended St Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral mass, officiated by his nephew, Reverend Millard Boyer, at 11:00am on November 19, 2018, at St Catherine of Siena, 105 BONNABEL BLVD, Metairie, Louisiana, 70005. Visitation immediately preceding mass at 10:00am. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is handling arrangements, 5100 PONTCHARTRAIN BLVD, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70124. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his honor to either Jesuit High School or Loyola University.
