John Wesley Cameron entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the age of 81. He was born in Bude, Mississippi to the late Lucien Cameron and Annie Mae Cameron. John leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife of 60 years, Jessie Cameron; children Debra Williams, Shirley Oscar, and Theonette Cameron; grandchildren Lakesha Williams, Lawrence Williams, Kelth Cameron, and Sheena Oscar; great-granddaughter Taliyah Jackson; siblings James Edward Cameron, Annie Lee Campbell, Tommie Lee Cameron, Larcine Cameron, Pearl Lee Cameron, Geneva Cameron, Johnnie Cameron, and Willie Roy Cameron.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son Cleo Gary Oscar; great-grandson Larenz Williams; siblings Lucien Cameron, Jr., Robert Earl Cameron and Cathy Marie Cameron.
As an adult he joined the church under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Matthews McGary, Sr. of Second Zion Baptist Church No. 1. Later he accepted the call of becoming an ordained minister, under the direction of Rev. Dr. Matthews McGary, Sr. He attended Union Baptist College and Theological Seminary. John was an associate minister under the direction of Rev Dr. Robert L. Turner and was a faithful member of the Evangelical Board and member of the Male singing chorus. Early in life, Rev John was employed with the local ILA 24 longshoreman division from 1966 to 1985, and was the first African American sanitation truck driver for the New Orleans. John will be fondly remembered for his infectious smile and calming spirit and firm handshake. He was a faithful man of God and took every opportunity to witness to everyone he met. John was passionate about family life, his Mississippi roots, and professing his love for Jesus. John will be truly missed.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Heart of Hospice, Audubon Retirement Village, his caregivers Lisa Meyer, and his loving grandson Kelth Cameron who took such great care of him.
A visitation will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00am—Interment in Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum.
