Frances Evelyn McGittigan, 92, passed away peacefully in Franklin, Tennessee on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Terrance “Terry” Joseph McGittigan.
Frances was born on March 20, 1931 in Birmingham, Alabama, and spent her life between the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Franklin, Tennessee. She graduated from Eleanor McMain High School and received an associate degree in business from Southwestern Louisiana Institute.
On New Years Eve 1951, she met her soul mate and love of her life in New Orleans. After living most of their married lives in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Frances and Terry moved to Franklin in 2015. As a proud mother to her children, she was actively involved in their schools, where she volunteered as PTA President, as well as a leader of both Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops. She was also a committed member of The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (Baton Rouge Chapter), where she volunteered in various programs to promote children’s literacy. Frances had a tremendous love for all card games (especially bridge), gardening, crossword puzzles, sudoku, solving algebra problems for fun, and a good, cold Diet Coke. By knowing her, you saw a true example of a southern belle. Advanced stages of dementia did not stifle her expressions of “thank you” and an abundance of graciousness to every doctor, nurse, or caregiver.
Frances leaves behind her four children Jimmy (GG Howard), Kathy Morford, Tommy (Anne), and David (Sonja); her seven grandchildren Mary Frances, Elizabeth, Katie, Timmy, Sarah, Rachel, and Abbie; her seven great grandchildren Maddy, Jackson, Zona, Adele, Fay, Beck, and Julian. She was also preceded in death by her parents Fletcher Beck and Abbie Mae Williams, siblings Fletcher Beck Williams and Bettye Lynn Boutwell, and son-in-law Garrett Morford.
In celebration of Frances and her full life, services will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana. All friends and family are welcome to join us for the visitation beginning at 9:30AM, followed by a Memorial Mass at 11AM. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, please celebrate Frances’s life by giving a gift in her memory to Alive Hospice Residence Nashville, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203.
